HONOLULU, Hawai’i-- Azusa Pacific’s bid at back-to-back wins over 11th ranked Fresno Pacific ended, and quickly, in Thursday’s quarterfinal match of the Pacific West women’s tennis championship tournament. The 24th ranked Cougars, who posted their first-ever win over the Sunbirds on March 25, were swept 5-0 in the rematch, giving Fresno Pacific its 19th win in the 20-match series dating back t0 2006.
The Sunbirds, seeded fourth in the tournament, started hot, getting wins in each of the doubles matches to grab a quick 3-0 lead. Marie Boura and Petra Jurova defeated Emily Harris and Danae Ingwaldson 8-4 at No. 1, while Erika Januskova and Katarena Paliivets beat Brejohn McCrary and Kim Koetterheinrich 8-4 at No. 2. Samantha Kaneta and Stephanie Quan pushed Ana Mikhaylova and Nicole Simoni at No. 3 before falling 9-7.
In singles Ingwaldson lost 6-1, 6-1 to Jurova at No. 2, before Koetterheinrich’s 6-0, 6-1 defeat sealed Fresno Pacific’s victory.
With the loss the Cougars are eliminated from championship contention, and will move into the losers’ bracket where they’ll face Dominican on Friday at 12:30 p.m. (HAST). If Azusa Pacific wins it will play in the fifth place match on Saturday.
