AZUSA, Calif.-- The Azusa Pacific women’s tennis team opened the 2014 regular season with a 7-2 win over Vanguard on Saturday at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex. The Cougars, who return five of their top-six players from the 2013 season, took four of the six singles matches before sweeping doubles play to record their 11th consecutive season-opening win.
Senior Emily Harris made her second consecutive season opener atop the Cougar lineup, and registered a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory over Juliet Labarthe, while Natalie Johnson shined in her Azusa Pacific debut with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Gabriele Alford at No. 3.
Danae Ingwaldson rallied from a first set loss with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win against Sophie Angner at No. 2, and Lindsey Yeom kicked off the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Michaele Sullivan at No. 5. Kim Koetterheinrich fell to Ashley Wao-Udin at No. 4 singles, and Bethany Duval had her seven-match winning streak snapped by Brook Ferslov in a 6-4, 6-2 loss at No. 6.
In doubles play Stephanie Quan and Johnson clinched Azusa Pacific’s victory with an 8-1 defeat of Wao-Udin and Ferslov. Harris and Ingwaldson then made it a 6-2 match with an 8-3 win over Angner and Alford, before Koetterheinrich and Yeom closed out the day with an 8-5 defeat of Labarthe and Sullivan.
The Cougars will return to play next weekend when the travel to San Diego for matches against UC San Diego and Point Loma on Friday and Saturday.
