LA JOLLA, Calif.-- After fending off two match points, senior Emily Harris clinched the Azusa Pacific women’s tennis team’s second straight win with a dramatic three set victory at No. 1 singles against UC San Diego on Friday night. Harris’ determination sealed a 5-3 Azusa Pacific victory after the Tritons rallied to erase the Cougars’ 3-2 lead before the match ended with Stephanie Quan still battling at No. 6.
Harris battled in a tight three-set affair at No. 1, falling in the first set 5-7, before rallying for a 7-5 victory and eventually clinching a victory with a 6-1 win. Natalie Johnson and Lindsey Yeom notched each of the Cougars’ other singles wins after Azusa Pacific took two of three in doubles play.
Johnson registered a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3, while Yeom tabbed a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4. The Tritons posted wins at No. 2 and No. 4, with Kim Koetterheinrich losing 6-5, 5-7, 3-6, and Ingwaldson recording a 6-2, 6-2 loss at No. 2. Quan’s match was in the third set when Harris clinched Azusa Pacific’s win.
In doubles the Cougars got a win at No. 1 behind an 8-2 victory from Harris and Ingwaldson. Johnson and Quan recorded an 8-6 win at No. 3, while Koetterheinrich and Yeom fell 8-4 at No. 2.
Azusa Pacific will continue play on Saturday against Point Loma before returning home against Concordia on Monday.
