AZUSA, Calif.-- The No. 16 ranked Azusa Pacific women’s tennis team picked up its 10th win of the season in an 8-1 victory against Western New Mexico on Monday. The Cougars took two of three in doubles, and swept singles play, recording their second win against the Mustangs this season in their seventh match in the past two weeks.
Azusa Pacific opened up a 2-0 lead with Kim Koetterheinrich and Lindsey Yeom teaming up for an 8-2 doubles win after Natalie Johnson and Bethany Duval nabbed an 8-0 victory at No. 3. The Mustangs, however, edged out Emily Harris and Danae Ingwaldson 9-7 at No. 1 doubles to make it a 2-1 match.
The Cougars then swept singles play, getting three quick wins from the bottom of the lineup to clinch the victory. Koetterheinrich double-bageled Dena Irvin at No. 5 before Duval cruised in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Marissa Aguirre at No. 6. Quan’s 6-2, 6-2 win against Diamond Morril sealed the Cougars’ 10th win.
Johnson posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Marie Monier at No. 2 before Ingwaldson closed out Claudia Osuna 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. 25th ranked Harris finished the day with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ganna Tiurania at No. 1.
The Cougars, who have played five times in the last seven days, will enjoy a nice break before facing Tufts (Mass.) on Friday, March 21.
