SURPRISE, Ariz.-- The No. 13 ranked Azusa Pacific women’s tennis team fell 5-0 to 14th ranked Academy of Art in the third place match at the Pacific West Conference championship tournament. The Cougars, who won their earlier meeting against the Urban Knights back in March, faced a quick 3-0 hole in doubles, and couldn’t gain any traction in singles, with Art U clinching third place with wins at No. 5 and No. 6.

In singles, Daniela Amelunge got the first win, 6-1, 6-1 against Kim Koetterheinrich, before Jenny Johansson got the clinching win at No. 6 singles, edging Bethany Duval 6-2, 6-1.

Emily Harris, who won the PacWest tournament’s sportsmanship award, was leading 7-6, 1-0 when the match was finished, while Dane Ingwaldson was locked up 3-3 in the second set with Michelle Dandik after dropping the first set 7-5.

In doubles the Urban Knights registered an 8-4 win at No. 1 against Harris and Natalie Johnson before Stephanie Quan and Koetterheinrich fell 8-2 at No. 3. Lindsey Yeom and Ingwaldson suffered an 8-4 loss against Lucia Zavarickova and Johansson at No. 2.

Azusa Pacific will now turn its attention towards the National Christian College Athletics Association championship tournament, which begins May 6 in Mobile, Ala.
