At-Large, At Last

AZUSA, Calif. -- By the skin of their teeth, they are in. It came down to the last at-large berth, but Azusa Pacific got it, and the Cougars off to their fifth straight NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship tournament.

The Cougars, who finished the regular season 12-11 overall and finished third in the GSAC at 5-5 advancing to the Region II semifinals, received the 12th and final at-large berth into the 24-team field. The single-elimination tournament is in Peachtree City, Ga. May 12-16.

Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 19 in the NAIA, opens the first round Monday (May 12) against No. 15 Pikeville (Ky.) in a match that immediately follows the earlier 1 p.m. matches. The Bears are currently 12-2 and are the 2-time defending champions of the Mid-South Conference but lost in the Region XI championship match to Cumberland (Tenn.).

The Azusa Pacific-Pikeville winner will face No. 3 Point Loma Nazarene, which receives a first-round bye, in the second round Tuesday (May 13).
