Azusa Pacific 3
POMONA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific dug itself a hole and then couldn’t get out in falling NCAA Division II No. 7-ranked Rollins (Fla.), 6-3, on the second day of the Xenia Anastasiadou Tournament at Cal Poly Pomona Saturday.
The loss snaps the Cougars’ 9-game winning streak and drops them to 13-3 overall. Rollins improves to 12-3 with its seventh straight win.
"With a few breaks, we could've won this match," said Azusa Pacific head coach Mark Bohren. "Still, we played well against a very good team."
The Tars took a quick 3-0 lead after sweeping all 3 doubles’ matches. The Cougars fought back, though, to take 3 singles’ matches, but the Tars did more than enough to keep the Cougars at bay and clinch a berth into tomorrow’s finals against Abilene Christian (Texas).
Perhaps the turning point of the match came at No. 3 doubles when the Cougars' team of Christiana Scolinos and Lynn Quitoriano jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to see the Tars' Kat Hamlin and Tricia Gahret come all the way back to steal the point.
Bay Daniels (No. 3), Mayu Sato (No. 4) and Lynn Quitoriano (No. 5) accounted for the Cougars’ 3 points.
