POMONA, Calif. -- UC San Diego, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II, rebounded from a 2-1 deficit after doubles’ play to sneak by the NAIA’s No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific, 5-4, Sunday in the final match of the 2005 Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona.

The loss is the Cougars’ second straight and drops them to 13-4 overall. The Tritons improve to 13-3.

It is the Cougars’ second straight loss to an NCAA Division II top 10 team.

"We came up just short once again," said Azusa Pacific head coach Mark Bohren. "I was real proud of the way we played in this tough NCAA Division II tournament. We showed well."

The Cougars quickly jumped out to a narrow 2-1 lead after doubles’ play, picking up tight wins at No. 1 (9-7) and No. 2 (8-6). However, the Tritons stormed back to win 4 singles’ matches. Kristin Bronowicki clinched the win at No. 5 when she edged Lynn Quitoriano, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.

Jennifer Dao and Bay Daniels earned the Cougars’ points in singles.
