AZUSA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Vanguard came back from an early 2-1 deficit to win 5 of 6 singles’ matches and defeat No. 4 Azusa Pacific, 6-3, in a battle of top 5 teams Friday in Azusa.

With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 14-5 overall, 9-2 GSAC. Vanguard all but wraps up the 2004 GSAC title as it improves to 16-3, 11-0.

The Cougars quickly jumped out a 2-1 lead after winning at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles by identical 9-7 scores. Jennifer Dao and Bay Daniels nearly made it a clean sweep before falling to Amy Brown and Olga Hlushchanka, 8-6, at No. 1.

In singles’ play, though, Vanguard snatched all momentum to take the match. The Cougars’ lone singles’ point came from Mayu Sato as she downed Damia Dinkervoort, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Peggy Bell nearly took another point at No. 2 before narrowly falling to Jenny Edner, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Vanguard swept the other 4 matches in straight sets.
