NAIA Tournament – Second Round
MOBILE, Ala. -- Last year, Azusa Pacific defeated Northwood (Fla.), 5-1, to advance past the quarterfinals and eventually into the finals. This year, the Cougars knocked off Northwood to get to the quarterfinals.
The fifth-seed Cougars took 2-of-3 doubles’ matches then relied on the bottom half of their lineup to cruise past the Seahawks, 5-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2005 NAIA Tournament Tuesday in Mobile, Ala.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 20-7 overall. Northwood concludes its season at 13-7.
Peggy Bell and Lynn Quitoriano downed Elena Pak and Veronica Perez, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles, and Mayu Sato and Christiana Scolinos upended Quin Davidson and Shavain Gostavsa, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead, putting them in position to get just a split of the 6 singles’ matches.
Sato (No. 4), Quitoriano (No. 5) and Scolinos (No. 6) then did the necessary work, winning their respective matches in straight sets to clinch the match and put the Cougars in the quarterfinals for the second straight year. The Cougars next face fourth-seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) tomorrow at 11 a.m. (PDT).
