Embry-Riddle (Fla.) 1
NAIA Tournament – Quarterfinals
MOBILE, Ala. -- Three of the top 4 seeds advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 NAIA Women’s Tennis Tournament today, and Azusa Pacific wasn’t one of them—one of the top seeds that is.
The fifth-seeded Cougars became the only team not seeded in the top 4 to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals with a convincing 5-1 win over fourth-seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.).
With the win, the Cougars move to 21-7 overall and advances to their second straight semifinal appearance. The Cougars face top seed and undefeated Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) in a rematch of last year’s championship match won by the Senators. Embry-Riddle finishes its season at 17-7.
Azusa Pacific snuck away a pair of doubles’ points, edging out identical 8-6 wins at Nos. 1 and 2. With the match tied at 1-1, Peggy Bell and Lynn Quitoriano defeated Liezl Samios-Uv and Alex Buttazzoni, 8-6, at No. 2 to steal the all-important second point.
That win seemingly deflated Embry-Riddle and gave all the momentum to the Cougars, who then went out in singles’ play and took care of business. Jennifer Dao knocked off Nora Kluge, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1, Bay Daniels stormed past Buttazzoni, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3, and Quitoriano closed the deal with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Natalie Anaya at No. 5.
This marks the second straight year that Azusa Pacific placed both of its men’s and women’s tennis teams in the semifinals.
