Lions Squeak By Cougars

Wed., Mar. 22, 2006

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- In its bid to upset the No. 3-ranked team in the nation, Azusa Pacific came close but, in the end, fell short as it dropped a 5-4 decision to Vanguard.

The Cougars, ranked fifth in the nation, lost 2 doubles matches but battled back in singles play. Jennifer Dao defeated Hana Jurcovicova, 6-3, 7-5 to jump start Azusa Pacific. However, in a terrific match at No. 3, Damia Donkervoort and Bay Daniels split the first 2 sets before Donkervoort put on a terrific performance in the third set winning it 6-0.

Kim Tran, who has proved to be a great addition, played the best tennis of the day for the Cougars. She was dominant in a straight set singles win and she combined with Dao on a dominant 8-1 performance in doubles.

“We had our chances today but just couldn’t get it done,” said head coach Mark Bohren. “I am confident that we can play better the next time around.”

With the win, Vanguard improves to 7-2 having played all 9 matches in the GSAC. Azusa Pacific falls to 8-3 overall and 6-3 in conference.
