Cougars Advance Past Lions

AZUSA, Calif. -– The No. 2-seeded Azusa Pacific defeated the No. 3-seeded Point Loma Nazarene, 5-1, to advance to the championship match of the Region II tournament.

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead after the conclusion of doubles play that saw the Lions No. 1 team of Hana Jurcovicova and Damia Donkervoort defeat Jennifer Dao and Kim Tran in a close match, 8-6.

However, Azusa Pacific bounced back by winning the No. 2 match as Bay Daniels and Katy Jelsma upended Olivia Amstad and Tiffany Teerawat, 8-6. The split left the advantage heading into singles play up to Court 2 where the No. 3 teams were battling it out.

Azusa Pacific’s Peggy Bell and Raquel Gottfried polished off an 8-2 win over Kristen Eichenmueller to put the Cougars ahead.

In singles action, wins by Tran, Daniels and Jelsma moved the Cougars into the regional final tomorrow against Fresno Pacific. Tran and Jelsma were each winners by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores over Teerawat and Eichenmueller respectively. Daniels defeated Amstad, 6-0, 6-2.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 19-4. Meanwhile, Vanguard falls to 18-5 on the season.
