Sweeping Success

REDLANDS, Calif. -- It was an Azusa Pacific women’s tennis sweep at the finals of the Redlands Invitational Saturday afternoon in an individual tournament featuring players from Azusa Pacific Point Loma Nazarene, Occidental and tournament host Redlands.

Senior Jennifer Dao defeated junior Bay Daniels in the 1-2 finals event, while junior Kim Tran and sophomore Katy Jelsma were victorious in the 3-4 and 5-6 finals, respectively. Daniels picked up an impressive win over Point Loma Nazarene’s top player Ashley Strimple on her way to the finals matchup with Dao.

In doubles, Tran and Dao won the No. 1 flight, Jelsma and Daniels won the No. 2 flight, and sophomore Lindsey Cloninger and senior Peggy Bell teamed up to complete the sweep by winning the No. 3 doubles flight.

The Cougars open the season in team competition next Saturday, Feb. 3, when they visit UC San Diego at 10 a.m. Azusa Pacific is on the road for its first 4 matches before the home opener against Westmont in a GSAC match on Sat., Feb. 24 at the Cougars’ home courts located at nearby Citrus College.
