SAN DIEGO, Calif. –- A full set of Cougars returned to Point Loma Nazarene for the second straight week, and Azusa Pacific enjoyed another good day of competition and high marks in the Spring Break meet.
The Cougar men won 8 of 20 events and finished second in the 8-team field with 354 points. NCAA Division III power Williams (Mass.) won the meet with 425.
As he did last week at Point Loma, senior Tal Mor lead the Cougars on the track by winning both the 100 (10.78) and 200 meters (21.66).
Junior David Pichler won the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best 14.84.
The Cougars displayed their sprint prowess by winning all 3 relays – the 4x100 (41.97), the 4x400 (3:19.89) and the 4x800 (NAIA-qualifying 7:44.41).
In the field events, James Ferguson won the hammer throw (171’ 2”) and finished second in both the shot (54’ 3¾”) and the discus (NAIA-qualifying and personal record 157’ 3”).
Freshman Stephon Arnold won the high jump (6’ 6”).
The Cougar women won 5 events, including their forte, a pair of throwing events. As has been the case throughout the entire indoor season and the early weeks of the outdoor campaign, juniors Ruth Wilhelm and Megan Ilertsen shined in the throws.
Ilertsen enjoyed a fine day in a trio of throws, finishing seventh in the shot (38’ 0”) and second in the discus (personal record -147’ 10”). However, it was in the hammer where she excelled, winning the event with a personal-record throw of 157’ 8”
Meanwhile, Wilhelm, an All-American from last year, won the shot put (outdoor personal record 41’ 5¾”), beating her nearest competitor by nearly a foot, and finished just behind Ilertsen in the hammer (second place, 152’ 9”) and discus (third place, 141’ 3”). She also finished third in the javelin (113’ 10”).
All-American Lorraine Swaby won the 400 meters in her outdoor season debut, clocking an NAIA-qualifying 56.51. Swaby came back to run the third leg on the Cougars’ 4x400 relay, leading Azusa Pacific to the victory with a 3:58.75. It was the second of 2 relay victories for Azusa Pacific on the day. The Cougars also took the 4x800 with a 9:17.40.
In other strong showings, All-American Morgan Altizer finished second in the pole vault (11’ 1”) and Sarah Jackson was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best 1:06.10.
While the rest of the team traveled south for the weekend, sophomore Aron Rono went north to the Stanford Invitational, where on Friday night he broke the school record in the 10,000 meters with a sizzling time of 28:50.81 to finish third in his race. Rono's effort shattered John Gachao's former school standard of 29:35.1 set back in 1998.
After back-to-back weekends in San Diego, the Cougars stay close to home this week to compete in the Pomona Invitational at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Saturday (April 7) beginning at 10 a.m.
