AZUSA, Calif. – Chris Randolph, a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier last year and former NCAA Division II national champion at Seattle Pacific University, came on strong over the final 4 events to come from behind and win the 2009 Mt. SAC Relays decathlon with 7636 points, capping a 2-day event in which 88 heptathletes and decathletes competed at Azusa Pacific University over the past 2 days.

Former Cal Poly standout Sharon Day won the Mt.SAC Relays heptathlon with a personal-record 5,823 points, the second-best score in the United States this year (Liz Roehring of University of Minnesota leads with 5,857). Last year’s Big West Conference champion, Day did not win any of today’s 3 events, but she was strong in all 3, going 19’ 6” in the long jump, 127’ 9” in the javelin and 2:20.08 in the 800 meters.

Annette Wichmann of the University of Hawaii via Germany was second with 5,334 points, while Great Britain’s Katia Lannon was third with 5,302.

First-day leader Barbara Nwaba, a sophomore at UC Santa Barbara, held on to capture her first-ever heptathlon title, winning the California Invitational heptathlon with a school-record 5,039 points. Amanda Gylling, a junior out of Adams State College used a PR in the javelin (131’ 7”) to finish second overall with 4,853 points. UC San Diego’s Stephanie LeFever was third with 4,829 points, the second-best score UCSD history.

University of Oklahoma alum Mitch Henry won the California Invitational decathlon with 7,089 points. Henry scored 3,459 points during the second day to rally for the victory. Notre Dame sophomore Justin Schneider used a blazing 4:23.74 to easily win the 1500-meter and finish second overall with a personal record 6,973 points. Redshirt freshman Derek Stenbach of the University of Wisconsin was third with 6,793 points in only his second collegiate decathlon. Azusa Pacific sophomore Casey Stevick, the first-day leader, finished fourth with 6,781 points.
