AZUSA, Calif. – If only all “indoor” track & field meets could be as fine as this one.
On a postcard-like day throughout the southland, Azusa Pacific went outside to stage and “indoor” qualifying meet and put together an effort that was on par with the surrounding weather.
Azusa Pacific punched 14 more tickets for the upcoming NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships during an “Indoor” Qualifier held at Cougar Stadium. The Cougar women, who were runner-up in both the NAIA indoor and outdoor championship meets last year, used 8 athletes to qualify in 4 events, the most notable coming in the 1000 meters where the Cougars went 1 through 5, with all 5 runners meeting the NAIA indoor standard. Sophomore Brianna Carstensen led the parade with a winning 2:55.62, closely followed by teammates Christine Krause (2:58.69), Tricia Hansen (3:00.72), Licette Saucedo (3:02.62) and Marissa Reeber (3:02.88)
Sophomore Niema Golphin-Miller, who spent much of last year on the shelf with nagging injuries, may have been the most impressive of all the Cougar women. The Philadelphia native qualified for the NAIA championships in both the 60 (7.89) and the 200 meters (24.64 – she won the event as well).
Meanwhile, senior thrower Vanessa Wilhelm, last year’s NAIA Outdoor Championship Meet MVP, launched a career-best 44-5½ on her first attempt in the shot put, qualifying for the NAIA meet while winning the event as well.
National champion Vivian Chukweumeka won the 20-pound weight throw with an NAIA-leading mark of 56-5 ¼.
Additionally, the Cougar 4x400-meter relay team qualified for nationals by blazing a 3:59.57.
On the men’s side, juniors Nate Farris and Micah Strom locked their names into the NAIA meet by winning their respective events. Farris ran away from the field to register a 48.79 in the 400 meters, while Strom clocked a 2:31.80 to win the 1000 meters. Farris also qualified in the 200 meters with a personal best 21.77.
Other Cougar winners included Micah Goins in the weight throw (52-10), Brian Wardell in the 5000 meters (15:27.46) and the 4x400-meter relay, which also qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championship Meet with a 3:19.20.
Next week, Azusa Pacific will go inside for its competition, traveling to Reno, Nevada, to compete in the Wolfpack Invitational at the University of Nevada.
