AZUSA, CALIF. –- Under threatening skies and cool temperatures, the Mt. SAC Relays/ California Invitational Heptathlons and Decathlons concluded Friday on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.
Over 80 athletes began the competition on Wednesday and the first 26 finished the California Invitational Heptathlon this afternoon with another ten highlighting the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon.
Former USC standout and 2-time Canadian national heptathlon champion Nicole Haynes came from behind to win the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon with 5,917 points, just 160 points off her career best. Haynes entered the day in third place but used a 158’ 2” throw in the javelin to overtake Robin Unger and assume the lead for good. Unger finished second with 5,808 points while first-day leader Michelle Perry was third with 5,684 points.
Fionna Asigbee, a junior out of the University of Missouri and the reigning Big 12 Conference pentathlon champ, captured the California Invitational Heptathlon crown with 5,151 points, edging teammate Michelle Moran, who finished second 5,106 points. In fact, a trio of Tigers finished in the top ten with Abbe Onkeck coming in seventh with a 7-event total of 4,866 points.
Asigbee led after the first day with 3,270 points and never surrendered her lead today. In fact, she won today’s opening event, the long jump, and cruised the rest of the way.
As the weather continued to sour into the day, more and more decathletes withdrew from the competition including last year's champion Paul Terek and U.S. great Chad Smith. As a result Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's Jon Takahashi won the Mt. SAC Relays Decathlon, partly because of his skill and the rest because of his toughness to endure the conditions. He tallied 7,165 points, the lowest winning score since 1985.
Otavius Gillespie of Guatemala won the California Invitational Decathlon with 6,986 points, using a near 200-foot javeling throw to assume a lead he never relinquished.
