SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Barbara Sugar won both the hammer and discus throws and Sarah Stafford posted a 4-inch personal best in the pole vault to highlight Azusa Pacific’s effort in a 6-way meet hosted by Point Loma Nazarene.

The Cougar women finished third with 197 points, trailing NCAA Division II member UC San Diego (357) and meet host Point Loma Nazarene (258).

Sugar won the discus with an NAIA season-best throw of 160’ 11,” a personal-best as well for the junior and the fourth-best throw in Azusa Pacific history. Earlier in the meet, she captured the hammer throw with another NAIA season-leading mark of 175’ 1.” Teammate Kristi Young was second with an NAIA Championship Meet qualifying throw of 154’ 5”, the sixth best throw in program history.

Meanwhile, Stafford cleared 11’ 5¾” in the pole vault, crushing her previous best of 11’ 1” set last year. She finished second overall though her vault matched that of Point Loma’s Delainey Rockwell, who won the event.

Freshman Ryann Hansen, who surprised everyone by winning All-American honors in the indoor pentathlon last month, made reservations for the NAIA Outdoor Championship Meet when she finished second in the triple jump with personal-best leap of 37’ 7 ¼” in her first-ever outdoor collegiate competition in the event. It was the fifth-best jump in program history.

In the Cougars’ only other event victory, freshman Olivia Richert won the 3000 meters (10:25.36)

On the men’s side, Azusa Pacific finished second to UC San Diego with 267 points. Senior Mark Grubbs was the standout of the day, winning the javelin throw with a personal best of 190’ 7” while qualifying for the NAIA outdoor meet.

Sophomore Matt Sparks clocked a career best in winning the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a 53.46, and in the process automatically qualified for next month’s NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Last week, he met the NAIA standard in the 110-meter high hurdles.

All-American Danny Reid won the 800 with 1:53.02 in his first half mile of the season, barely missing the NAIA automatic qualifying standard. He came back later to lead the Cougar 4x800-meter relay to a winning time of 7:37.72 which easily met the NAIA championship meet standard.

Quarter-mile specialist Tony Ramirez dropped down this week to the shorter sprints and won the 200 with a 21.64 after recording a 10.91 to finish second in his first-ever 100 on the collegiate level.

Azusa Pacific comes home this week to host its first outdoor meet of the season, the Meet of Champions which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday (April 9).
