AZUSA, Calif.. –- University of Oregon senior Lauryn Jordan clocked a personal-best 24.59 in the 200 meters and rallied to grab the early lead in the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon hosted by Azusa Pacific University in Southern California.
Jordan, a native of Stockton, Calif., who owns a personal best of 5,299 points in the heptathlon – a mark under threat heading into Thursday’s final round of competition, was in fourth place heading into the day’s final event -- the 200 meters. Colorado State junior Katie Lloyd, last year’s meet runner-up, was in the lead with a 40-point cushion over Jordan. Yet, in less than half a minute, Jordan erased the deficit, passing Lloyd, Wallin Reidun and Jackie Poulson in the process. Jordan’s 200 time is the best by any Duck this season.
Though Jordan goes to sleep tonight with the lead, her rest may not be peaceful. Just 124 points separate the top 4 competitors. Poulson is second with 3,278 points followed by Wallin’s 3,270 and Lloyd at 3,213.
Two-time U.S. indoor champion and former NCAA champion Ryan Harlan leads the Mt. SAC Relays Decathlon with 4,222 points, 170 points ahead of second place Chris Richardson, a junior out of Long Beach State and a former California state junior college champ. Harlan used a monstrous throw of 53' 6 1/2" in the shot put to break the second-oldest meet record by nearly 2 feet (50' 11 1/2 by Doug Moss of Nevada-Reno in 1980).
Other than a brief take-over by Richardson after the long jump, Harlan led today's competition nearly from beginning to end, running a meet best 11.09 in the 100 meters.
In the California Invitational Heptathlon, Hawaii’s Annett Wichman assumed the first day lead after winning the shot put with a heave of 45’ 7 ¼” to overtake Michigan’s Bettie Wade. Wichman, a 22-year old sophomore out of Germany, clocked a 26.47 200 to finish day 1 with 3,193 points, just 10 points ahead of Wade’s 3,183. Wichman’s end capped a big day for her in which she set school records in the shot and 200 to go along with another that she established to open the day, running a 14.91 in the 100 hurdles.
Meanwhile, Wade established personal season bests in the 100 hurdles (14.38), high jump, which she won with a 5’ 6” leap, and the 200 (25.57).
In the California Invitational Decathlon, Cal State Northridge sophomore Justin Johnson put together a final all-around day and used a 50.33 in the 400 meters to pull away from the field and assume a 137-point lead after the first day of competition. Johnson tallied 3,806 points over the course of 5 events and leads Kevin Johnson of Colorado State who tallied 3,669 points.
