AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific’s volleyball team will host a “Dig Pink” event for the second straight season, joining hundreds of college programs in raising support and awareness for breast cancer research. The NAIA’s No. 5-ranked Cougars will be wearing special pink jerseys for their Wednesday, Nov. 11 match against No. 11 Biola.
The match, originally scheduled for Oct. 27, was postponed when a power outage affected the Azusa Pacific campus for nearly 2 hours that evening.
Last season, Azusa Pacific’s first “Dig Pink” match was also against Biola, with a crowd of 835 on hand for a matchup of NAIA Top 15 programs.
Dig Pink is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held throughout the month of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. In 2008, the Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Rally raised $390,000, according to www.side-out.org, and over 1,000 college volleyball teams are expected to participate in the 2009 program.
All donations made Tuesday night will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.
Wednesday’s match begins at 7 p.m. at the Felix Event Center, and it will be Azusa Pacific’s last home match before the Saturday, Nov. 14 regular-season finale against Concordia.
