AZUSA, Calif. -- For just the second time in program history, three Azusa Pacific student-athletes were included on the 2011 All-Golden State Athletic Conference volleyball team, highlighting one of the best seasons the Cougar volleyball program has ever produced.
Amy Alkazin became just the third four-time All-GSAC selection for Azusa Pacific, joining a select group that includes Jenna Sagehorn and Jill Baker, and she also earned her third NAIA All-American honors with her selection to the first team. Alkazin is one of just four Cougars (Sagehorn, Baker, and Stephanie Alpenia were the others) as three-time NAIA All-Americans.
Senior right side hitter Whittany Radcliffe earned NAIA All-American third team recognition, her second consecutive All-American honor, and she was also named All-GSAC for the second time. After tallying 67 kills and 14 blocks in five national tournament matches, Radcliffe also picked up NAIA All-Tournament honors for the second consecutive season. She and Baker are the only players in program history to earn all-tournament honors in back-to-back seasons.
Senior libero Robin Portela, who shattered her own single-season digs record and also became the program’s career digs leader, garnered her first career All-GSAC nod, and she was an NAIA All-American honorable mention.
The 2005 All-GSAC volleyball team which included Jenny Brickner, Allison Kincheloe, and Chelsea Morgan was the only other time Azusa Pacific had three players earn all-conference recognition in the same season.
Senior outside hitter Marguerite Hanna, an applied health major, and sophomore defensive specialist Nicole Sepulveda (an academic junior majoring in liberal studies) were also recognized for their efforts in the classroom, earning GSAC and NAIA-Daktronics Scholar Athlete awards. In addition, Hanna was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District College Division first team – the first such honor for an Azusa Pacific volleyball student-athlete.
In 2012, Azusa Pacific University will join the Pacific West Conference for all sports except football as the school enters its second year of a three-year transition into NCAA Division II membership.
