SAN RAFAEL, Calif.-- The Azusa Pacific women’s volleyball team closed out its regular season schedule with a 3-1 road loss to Dominican on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars rallied back in the second set before dropping the fourth set to the Penguins (18-25, 25-19, 23-25, 12-25) to end their conference slate at 13-7 (21-9).
The Cougars virtually matched the Penguins point for point in the third set with six lead changes. Azusa Pacific led 23-22 in the waning moments before Dominican rallied for three points, closing out the set. The Penguins took an early lead in the fourth, and grabbed a 13-point edge to take the match.
The Penguins posted a .233 attacking percentage, and sided out Azusa Pacific at a near 61 percent rate.
Senior middle blocker Christy Cain led the Cougars with 13 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Mattie Shelford had 12. Junior outside hitter Alicia Utke tabbed 10 kills and led the team with 23 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Joy Reinke recorded 22 digs.
Sophomore setter Jaden Louie had seven digs and registered a team-high 30 assists.
Azusa Pacific will travel to San Diego on Friday for the NCCAA West Final against Point Loma. The Cougars and Sea Lions split their regular season series 1-1, with each team sweeping the other at home.
