PHOENIX, Ariz. -- After getting drilled in 3 straight games by the NAIA’s No. 3-ranked Madonna (Mich.) in the morning, Azusa Pacific rebounded beautifully and dominated The Franciscan University (Ohio) 30-20, 30-16, 30-22 in game 2 of the 2004 Cactus Classic hosted by Grand Canyon.
With the split on Day 1, the Cougars move to 4-3 on the season.
After taking the first game from the Saints, the Cougars used a 12-0 spurt midway through the second game to seize control of the match. With game 2 tied 14-14, Chelsea Morgan buried a kill to give the Cougars a 15-14 lead and the serve. Maria Abaca promptly took serve and reeled off 11 straight points which the Cougars a 26-14 lead.
Morgan finished the match with 9 kills, getting 7 of them in the second game. She had 10 attempts and just 1 error. Morgan had 4 of her kills in the run while Abaca had back-to-back aces.
The Cougars jumped all over the Saints from the get-go, committing just 2 attack errors in the opening game. They hit at a .381 clip, and Colleen Walker accounted for 5 of their 18 kills.
Jenny Brickner shared match-high honors with Morgan getting 9 kills. She also had a match-high 3 blocks. As a team, the Cougars finished with 6 blocks, 53 digs and 10 service aces. Brianne Huff had 8 kills (just 1 error) and 10 digs.
In the opening game, Madonna defeated the Cougars, 30-18, 30-26, 30-20.
