PORTLAND, Ore. -- After finishing out the Sunbird Invitational last weekend with a disappointing loss to Savannah Art and Design (Ga.) one got the feeling that the NAIA’s No. 17-ranked Azusa Pacific was chomping at the bit to hit the court again.
Today at the Holiday Inn Volleyball Invitational, the Cougars did just that bouncing back in a big way by sweeping the NAIA’s No. 9-ranked Georgetown (Ky.), 3-0, then later defeating Montana Tech, 3-0.
The Cougars (5-1) knocked off the Tigers 30-24, 30-19, 32-30 in their morning match. Freshman Brittany Brown had 10 kills and senior Colleen Walker recorded 9 kills and added 3 service aces in a balanced team effort that head coach Chris Keife praised.
“It was a full team effort today,” he said. “It was good for the girls to play well against such a good team.”
Defensively sophomore Alison Pattison had 15 digs and freshman Heather Flores added 12.
The Cougars then knocked off Montana Tech 30-20, 30-19, 30-16 to complete their pair of victories. Azusa Pacific has swept each opponent that it has defeated and is off to its best start since opening the 2002 campaign 5-0.
“It’s not about one girl in particular but everyone playing their part to help us,” Keife said.
The tournament continues tomorrow with another set of matches for the Cougars. They will face NCAA Division II member Humboldt State at 11 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m. will take on Lubbock Christian of the Sooner Athletic Conference.
