AZUSA, Calif. -- The NAIA's No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific ran its most efficient offense of the season in a 30-27, 30-12, 30-15 sweep over San Diego Christian Tuesday evening. The Cougars set season-highs with a team .388 attack percentage and 64 kills, the best 3-game total of the 2006 campaign.
"We played very well," said Cougar head coach Chris Keife. "Allison Kincheloe did an exceptional job running our offense, and Jill Baker and Chelsea Morgan each had one of their best matches of the season tonight, and as a team, we did a great job lowering our hitting errors."
Freshman Jill Baker led the way with a match-high 22 kills, extending her double-digit kill streak to 20 matches, including 6 20-kill performances. Baker was 1 of 3 Cougars to receive more than 25 sets, and no Azusa Pacific hitter committed more than 3 attack errors.
"Before the match, I focused on being more aggressive and taking it right to them," said Baker, who had 7 kills in Games 1 and 2 and 8 kills in the final game. "I found a good rhythm at the beginning, and it carried throughout the entire match."
In the opening game, Azusa Pacific fell behind 7-6 due to an effective San Diego Christian offense, but the Cougars scored 7 of the game’s next 8 points behind 2 kills apiece from Baker and sophomore Megan Burch and a Baker service ace to take a 13-8 lead. The Cougars led by at least 2 points the rest of the way in a 30-27 opening-game win.
Baker and senior Chelsea Morgan each had 3 kills as Azusa Pacific started the second game with a 14-5 burst, and with a 17-9 lead, the Cougars sprinted off with a 13-3 run to close out Game 2, 30-12. Baker closed out the game with a kill followed by consecutive aces.
With an early 5-4 lead in Game 3, Morgan and Baker registered consecutive kills to spark a 9-1 run that gave the Cougars a commanding 14-6 advantage. Baker posted 4 kills during a 12-4 run to close out Game 3, and Morgan sealed the 30-15 win with a match-ending kill, her 17th of the match.
"We have been working on being more aggressive, and a win like this definitely helps us feel like we can still dominate a match," said Morgan, who converted her 16th double-digit kill performance of the season in 28 attack attempts, primarily from sophomore setter Allison Kincheloe. "When Allison is on and the hitters are on, we are unstoppable. It is a great combination."
Burch posted 12 kills, and junior Alison Pattison tallied a match-high 13 digs and served a pair of aces in the third game. Sophomore setter Allison Kincheloe registered 9 digs to go with 52 assists, her highest assist total in a 3-game match this season. Baker added 4 service aces, notching 2 in each of the first 2 games.
"The passes were good tonight, and we were able to mix it up a little more than usual," said Kincheloe, who set up a 12-kill performance from Burch by setting her up with 26 attack attempts. "Having Megan in the back gives me another person to set, and she is really coming along and showing that she can shine."
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 16-4 on the season and becomes just the second Cougar squad in 25 years to post 16 wins in the first 20 matches of the season, matching the 16-4 mark compiled by the 2000 squad that ended up advancing to the NAIA National Tournament. The Cougars are now 8-3 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, while San Diego Christian drops to 1-13 overall, 0-11 in GSAC play.
