LA JOLLA, Calif.-- At the UC San Diego Mini Tournament Azusa Pacific dropped its sixth straight match, falling to No. 18 (CWPA) UC San Diego in a 13-4 loss. The Cougars, who went 0-2 on day one of the Invite yesterday, recorded just two goals over the final three quarters after going into the first break trailing 3-2.
Jennifer Horchler finished with four steals, one goal, and one assist, while Lora Donaldson registered a score and an assist. Brooke Sovick had a busy day in the cage, tallying 16 saves and three steals in the loss, while freshman Courtney Folsom recorded three steals.
After keeping the contest close through the first eight minutes the Cougars fell behind after the Tritons rattled off three second quarter goals while shutting out Azusa Pacific to take a 6-2 edge into halftime. In the third quarter UC San Diego found the back of the net four times while the Cougars tabbed just one score to trail 10-3 at the end of the third.
In the fourth the tournament hosts put another three on the scoreboard with Azusa Pacific adding one to go away with a 13-4 victory. The loss was the Cougars’ 11th in their last 12 matches, dropping them to 7-21 on the season.
Allison Gonzales and Taylor Whitney each had a goal in the game, while Whitney and Daniella Khatchetourian had one steal apiece. Azusa Pacific will enjoy a lengthy break before facing California Baptist on April 10th in Riverside.
