CLAREMONT, Calif.-- Azusa Pacific had its brief two-match winning streak snapped on Monday, falling to Brown (R.I.) 8-5 in the regular season finale. Brittney Garrigan continued her strong play, scoring a team-high two goals in the loss, while Jennifer Horchler added five more steals to her program-record.
Azusa Pacific fell behind early, trailing 4-2 at the first break, and going into the half with a 6-3 deficit. The Cougars and the Bears then exchanged four goals in the second half. Jessica Armagost and Katie Margot combined for nine saves in split duty.
Brown scored first in the match, getting a goal at the 6:42 mark before Angelina Castaneda gave Azusa Pacific its only tie of the game three minutes later. The Bears then rattled off two consecutive scores to go ahead 3-1, and Garrigan found the back of the net to cut the Brown lead to 3-2. The Bears, however, scored with 26 seconds remaining in the quarter to grab a 4-2 edge.
In the second frame Brown sandwiched a Horchler score with two goals to make it a 6-3 affair at the half. Brown pushed it to 7-3 in the third before Garrigan got a goal with 15 seconds on the clock. Then in the fourth Maryann Slama responded to a Bear goal with her lone goal of the night.
Azusa Pacific will now have more than two weeks off before traveling north to Fresno for the Division II Invite on April 13-14, before concluding the 2013 campaign at the NAIA Invite in Riverside on April 20.
