SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-- The Azusa Pacific women’s water polo team opened the 2014 season on Friday, falling to No. 5 ranked Arizona State before suffering an 18-6 defeat against No. 12 San Jose State on the first day of the two-day UC Santa Barbara Invitational. The Cougars, who are opening their first season as members of the Golden Coast Conference, will have faced three ranked teams by weekend’s end, with matchups against No. 20 Pacific and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.

Maryann Slama tabbed a hat trick in the loss to San Jose State, while sophomore keeper Katie Margot registered eight saves and a steal. Courtney Folsom scored one goal against SJSU and added two steals on the defensive end. Megan Minkime scored two goals on the day, with one coming in each match, while Taylor Whitney and Alynn Reade each found the back of the net against San Jose State.

In the loss to the Sun Devils (1-0) the Cougars scored goals in the first and second quarter before Arizona State outscored Azusa Pacific 9-0 in the second half. Junior Lora Donaldson tabbed the team’s first goal of the season, while Minekime recorded the Cougars’ only other goal against ASU.

Megan Myers tallied a pair of steals in her Azusa Pacific debut, and Slama and Folsom each dished out one assist. Senior keeper Jessica Armagost registered three saves in the season opener.

On Saturday Azusa Pacific will face a fellow GCC program when it plays No. 20 Pacific at 10:10 a.m. before closing out the opening weekend against Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:10 p.m.
