Philosophy of Leadership

The Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership Program is based on the following essential principles for effective leadership:

  • Understanding the basic concepts of human growth and development
  • Recognizing that individual leadership styles and personalities relate to the achievement of organizational goals and individual development
  • Acknowledging that social science and biblical values are operationalized into an informed ethic of leading
  • Viewing servant leadership as a liberating force in the development of human resources, as well as organizational goals
  • Developing communication, problem-solving, decision-making, conflict-resolution, change-strategy, staff-training, and development skills
  • Identifying and creating opportunities for learning in order to become proactive, lifelong learners and agents of change

Program Format

The program consists of one- or two-week intensive sessions usually held between June and August during which the student enrolls in up to four courses. The intensive sessions are followed by semester-long study projects contracted for each course with professors via the Internet, including email and APU library resources. These projects, like the classes themselves, relate directly to each student's occupational responsibilities. Students may earn up to 12 units of credit each year.

Program Goals

  • Explore the process of human development as it relates to individual and organizational development.
  • Apply human development concepts in order to creatively solve organizational problems and promote healthy organizational development.
  • Facilitate the use of change-agent skills in the areas of program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Work with the design and development of strategies that promote personal development and enhance the functioning of organizations.

Mission Statement

The mission and vision of the Organizational Leadership Program is to serve as a catalyst for the development of transcultural and transformational leaders worldwide.

About Our Students

Most students come from an established background of leadership in various fields and industries, with many coming from Christian organizations and educational institutions. The program draws both male and female students representing a variety of racial backgrounds. The age range generally includes those from 30-60 years old.

Degree Uses

The majority of students view this program as personal and professional development to enhance their current positions and roles within organizations as well as in their volunteer work. For some, this degree allows graduates to move into supervisory positions, become directors of programs, and achieve further credibility inside and outside their organizations. An M.A. often opens doors for teaching, consulting, and further graduate study.
