Advanced Standing

The two Advanced Standing program options allow selected outstanding BSW graduates to complete the MSW program at an accelerated rate on either a full-time or part-time basis. All Advanced Standing students take bridge coursework (6 units) in August, then go into concentration classes; they do not take any foundational MSW coursework.

Full-Time Advanced Standing (9 Months)

Students attend three weeks of bridge coursework (6 units) in August prior to the start of the concentration curriculum, then they join current second-year full-time MSW students for the remaining two semesters (30 units). Students complete a 20-hour-per-week internship at a field placement specific to their concentration; placements are available in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino, and Ventura counties. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, and internship hours are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (days and times to be arranged with agency).

Admission Requirements

  • Graduation from CSWE-accredited BSW program in the past 7 years
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Minimum B grade in all social work classes

  • Statistics course (grade C or higher)

Part-Time Advanced Standing (2 years)

The part-time Advanced Standing option allows students to complete the MSW program in two years while maintaining employment. Students attend three weeks of bridge coursework (6 units) in August prior to the start of the concentration curriculum, then they join current third-year part-time MSW students for the remaining two years (30 units). Students complete a 20-hour-per-week internship in the second year of the program at a field placement specific to their concentration; placements are available in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino, and Ventura counties. Classes are held Tuesday evenings (starting at 4:20 p.m.) and a few Saturdays, and internship hours are conducted weekdays (days and times to be arranged with agency). Students maintaining employment while in the program must have the ability to reduce/rearrange employment hours in the second year to accommodate the internship requirement.
