About the Program
Why This Major Is Relevant
As our society becomes increasingly culturally diverse and economically stratified, social work professionals are needed to identify and meet the needs of underserved populations both locally and globally. In addition, the aging Baby Boomer population will spur a marked increase in the call for social workers over the coming decade. Nursing homes, assisted living, hospice, and governmental programs will require compassionate experts with a heart for the elderly. APU’s social work degree uniquely positions graduates to meet these needs and take advantage of plentiful job opportunities and advancement potential.
Gain In-Depth Learning Experiences
All seniors participate in a 400-hour internship for a local social welfare agency. Locations include hospitals, homeless services, women's shelters, schools, child protective services, probation and parole, developmental disability services, mental health, drug and alcohol abuse prevention and treatment, and senior citizen centers/skilled nursing facilities. Internship opportunities provide contacts in the field and ensure that social work majors graduate with significant, relevant experience on their résumés.
For students interested in a study abroad experience, several required courses for the social work major are offered overseas.
