Risk!

Kevin Mannoia Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to walk by someone who’s hurting and sort of ignore them? “It’s not my hurt. I’m not affected.” But when someone we know or love gets hurt, we are much more attentive. We notice it and we respond to it with care. Funny how our response of suffering and empathy is in direct relationship to our love. We call love a risk precisely because it carries with it the possibility of hurt. Perhaps seeing other people like God sees them will cause us not to ignore them. Of course it also opens us to the risk of suffering when we see their hurt. But then again, it shows we have love for one another. And isn’t that one of the greatest commands of all?

If you have any prayer requests, please let me know. I will be sure our Prayer Partners pray for you.

God give you eyes to see others as He sees them.

Disconnect!

Kevin Mannoia Monday, January 4th, 2010

The batteries get weak and tired. Too much drain. Too many activities at once. Thankfully, they are rechargeable! All they need is a boost. A shot of new energy. So you plug them in. Soon they are ready to go again. Funny how we think our own lives work on the same principle. Drain – Plug in – Go again! In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Drain – DISCONNECT – Go. You see, when you disconnect, you allow for your sense of orientation to shift from doing, to being; from outside engagement, to inner reflection. And it gives God a chance to be heard over the din of your life. Disconnecting lowers the sound of your life so you can suddenly hear the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. That above all else will give you the reorienting boost you need to go again. Hopefully the last couple of weeks has been a good chance to disconnect. Let that be a time to renew and reorient your life around the new energy that comes from God’s presence.

I hope you will take advantage of the SoulQuest Fellowship in your program. If you are not sure when it meets, email me or contact the program office. And of course, any one of our Chaplains is available to you.
If you have any prayer requests, please let me know and I will have our Prayer Partners pray for you this week.
Blessings on you in the coming year,

Christmas Chaos

Staphon Monday, January 4th, 2010

When the Christmas season hits APU, EVERYONE knows it! If you try to start it too early, there are some people who will flat out do it, some will be hesitant about it, and some will tear you apart if you even whistle a Christmas Carol before Thanksgiving. Me, I LOVE the Christmas season, especially at APU. The day we all get back from Thanksgiving break, everyone just seems to be a little jollier, and the school just gets that much prettier with all the festive lights, its really just amazing.

And with Christmas comes, CHRISTMAS CHAOS!! and amazing event put on by Rez Life outside of Trinity and Engstom that just spells festive. There are all kinds of different games to play, bounce houses, Tree tossing, Christmas Caroling, Ornament Decorating, a huge tree, and of course, Santa makes an appearance. Its absolutely thrilling. And what could make it better than a visit from Terry Franson & Willie Hamlet!

Other things that are completely festive in southern California is the random city blocks who throw DOWN on Christmas lights, the most famous one being Rancho Cucamonga which has a few blocks worth of almost every house putting up a very festive light display complete with the selling of hot chocolate along the way, and churros, and popcorn, and other Christmasy things to accompany your stroll down the streets.

And that is just a small taste of Christmas around APU, Until finals roll around… DUN DUN DUN!

TO BE CONTINUED!…
Stay tuned for news about DEAD WEEK!

Dead Week/Finals

Staphon Monday, January 4th, 2010

The week before finals has gotten a famous name called Dead Week. It is the week before every final project is due, every final paper is due and all last minute studying is done. During this week, people lock themselves away in bedrooms, or in library’s or other random places around campus as they work on everything. Me and my friends decided to do something a little different to help ease the stress of it all… We build a Fort.

And that’s where we spent Finals week, making it SO much nicer and more comfortable. My suggestion, everyone should have a fort!
