As you slowly overtake the truck in the right lane, you keep glancing in your rear view mirror. Before you change lanes back into the right lane, you want to be sure you have truly passed the slower vehicle. So you keep checking. Too quick and you might just bump the truck and cause serious damage. If you assume you’re past the obstacle without confirming, a disaster may result. Growing in your spiritual life is no different. Most folks assume that once they decide to break a habit, let go of an attitude, or change a behavior they will automatically be okay. But unless you put it in your past and with the help of the Holy Spirit truly put it to rest, it can become a hazard and trip you up. God is certainly calling you forward. But He also gives the Holy Spirit to help you overtake and put to rest obstacles once and for all. That way they won’t become hindrances when you least expect it.

I found much truth in your latest blog. Several times in my life, I have thought that upon simply deciding to no longer continue in a bad habit I would be okay. After many attempts and failures, I have realized that only God can bring me completely out of my past. It is His grace and mercy, not my will alone (which I must admit can fluctuate), that saves us from our sinful nature.
