The Cougar Countdown: Day 8

DAY 8 (Aug. 8): Football Introduces New Look

What do you do when your helmet is dubbed “the coolest helmet in NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) College Football” by an independent blog?

If you’re Azusa Pacific, you introduce a brand-new alternate lid for road games, unveiling them for the first time on a Thursday night in August for a season-opening visit to NCAA Div. I UC Davis.

Azusa Pacific's new "stealth black" helmet (left) will be worn on the road, while the traditional brick red helmet seen on the right will continue to be worn at home.

The Cougars have spent the past 14 seasons wearing one of college football’s most unique helmets. A brick red base color features the one-of-a-kind “slash” logo, which was originally designed in 1998 to represent the claw marks of Azusa Pacific’s mascot, the cougar, along with a black facemask. The Cougars will continue to sport the current helmet at home.

The new helmet, which features a grey facemask, is painted with a solid coat of “stealth black” paint, a matte color with an industrial feel, which will be paired with the Cougars’ road uniform combination of white jerseys with black pants. The road helmet features the “AP” logo which was introduced by Azusa Pacific last summer.
