Why, Hello…Midterm Season

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

It has been a crazy week and a half. It seems like in the middle of the semester assignments and tests stack up for about two weeks. I’m just winding down after two big anatomy tests, two midterms, and a paper. As you can imagine it’s quite nice to have a little breather for a few days!

Its also been a pretty fun Halloween weekend. There’s always a lot of great school events going on. On friday night “The Event” was put on by communiversity in University Village (the on campus apartments across the street). Then the Shire Mods put on a carnival last night!

APU “Study” Day

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Today is study day, the one day a semester the school cancels all class in hopes that the students will use the extra time to prepare for midterms and get all caught up on school work. Study day, however, actually translates as something more along the lines of APU Disneyland/Beach Day.

I made myself a promise this year that I would actually use today to study, but here it is, 1:30pm, and I have yet to crack open a book. If it counts for anything I got one of my books out and it’s sitting on the coffee table in front of me all ready to be studied. Instead I’ve spent the morning relaxing, running, hanging with the roommates, and pretty much doing anything I can to avoid actually using study day for its purpose.

I feel pretty guilty not studying today though, because I’ve had so much fun over the last week. Last Thursday, a group of friends and I went to Knott’s Scary Farm. Then Friday, Mitch and I made the trip back to Visalia to go to my cousin’s wedding.

Not too guilty though, because Danielle and I just decided that we’re going to join the herds and make a trip to Disneyland tonight. :) Man, thank you APU for this vacation we call “study day.”

The One Where I Talk About God’s Presence

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

This week has been pretty consistent with the norm for a week at APU. The chapels have been great. The classes have been challenging yet very interesting. The weather’s been totally unpredictable. We go from scorching hot to raining and cold in less than a week. It’s actually pretty exciting, I never know what I’ll wake up to. I had another test in anatomy. I went to Kaleo tonight (the Wednesday night chapel). I spent some quality time laughing with my roommates this morning over facility management’s entertainment/possible annoyance with the completely avoidable flood in our bathroom.

In all the norm however, God has put a few things on my heart this week that I would love to share. One thing about APU that I personally don’t believe you could find anywhere else are people who truly brighten your day every time you cross paths. When I was first touring the school before I came here, I immediately noticed something different about APU’s campus. People smile at you and say hello when you walk by, and open doors for you. This is a different kind of Christian university, there’s something so special about it.

My family goes to a Christian camp on Catalina Island every summer called Campus by the Sea (aka CBS). This is where I could say I first began having an interest in attending Azusa Pacific. The summer before my senior year in high school, one of my long time girl friends was talking about possibly going to APU for college. I would say that the kind of people who run and go to CBS are role models for me in my aspiration to be the best Christian girl I can. This may seem irrelevant to what I was saying about APU being a special place, however, it was kind of the deciding factor for me choosing to come here for college. I absolutely love going to CBS every summer for one reason. You can truly feel God’s presence there. When I stepped foot on APU’s campus as a little tour student, this same feeling of God’s presence washed over me with an intensity I never could have imagined.

His presence on this campus is ever more and more obvious to me every day. It pours from the Upper Turner Campus Center and Felix Event Center during chapels. It’s ever present in the classrooms. But most significantly, I experience God’s presence and love every single day in the students and faculty.

I was having lunch with three of my friends on Tuesday afternoon. I don’t know why this day stuck out so much for me as being one where I knew God was present. Danielle is probably one of the most caring and selfless people I have ever met. She is there for me every single time I’m feeling down, or just need to talk. Mitch is such a huge support. He pushes me to do my best, and walks alongside me in pursuing my faith and life goals. Jeffrey is just such a joy. His bubbly personality and overflowing happiness with life is contagious to everyone around him. As we talked, I felt so much love and care just overflowing from each of their hearts. I had been having a fairly stressful day, and my lunch with them put me at complete peace. These are the Christians I want to be like. I thank God every day for calling me to a school where its normal to have friends like these. I don’t think you can find these kind of people or these kind of Christ-centered friendships everywhere. APU is a God filled school. I hope you have the chance to experience the environment I have the privilege of living in every day.

The One Where I Introduce Myself.

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Hey! Well my name is Hannah Gregerson, and my experience at APU so far has been nothing but amazing. As the year goes on, I hope to share my experiences as a student here with you!

There are so many good things I could write about APU, I’m having a hard time figuring out how to start! I guess I could start with a little background about myself and how I ended up here. I was born and raised in Visalia, CA. I’m a sophomore this year, majoring in nursing. I have a younger sister who’s a senior this year, and a younger brother who is in 6th grade. My dad is an elementary school teacher, and my mom is a pediatric physical therapist. I graduated from El Diamante High school in 2009, and haven’t missed it since I set foot on APU’s campus.

A little bit about who I am personally: More than anything, I’m so in love with God. Since I’ve been at APU, He’s become such a real factor in my life, and I’m learning more everyday about why I have such faith in Him. I’m really into outdoorsy stuff like backpacking and I LOVE hanging out with friends. I can only cry out of my left eye, I know, really weird. I’ve played the piano since I was five. I could literally live off of green tea, celery, and Special K bars. If you look in my cupboard, its pretty much stuffed full of only those three things. My favorite animals are owls, I think they’re adorable and I want one as a pet. If you find somewhere that sells them, please let me know! If you want to know anything else about me, just ask! I’m an open book. :)

Ending up at Azusa Pacific was really a God thing. I had never really even heard of APU until the middle of my senior year. I, by chance, toured it as a last stop on my way home from touring other schools. As soon as I walked on to the campus I knew it was where I wanted to go to college. Everyone was so friendly, and you can literally feel God’s presence here.

Here is a little taste of my life at APU so far.
