San Francisco Art Trip for High Sierra!

JP Park Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Hey guys! Sorry I haven’t blogged in two weeks! I have so much catching up to do with you guys, and so much to tell you all! As everyone keeps saying again and again, college is super busy and time flies by so fast. I feel like it was just last week when I flew on a plane from Virginia to California to start college, when in reality, I’m already almost done with my first semester.

A couple weeks ago, me and the rest of the students here went to San Francisco for an Art trip, where we visited numerous museums and cathedrals. We visited the New St. Mary’s cathedral, Old St. Mary’s cathedral, the Mission Delores Basilica, the Grace Cathedral, the Legion of Honors museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the De Young Museum. It was so amazing!!! When I walked inside each of the cathedrals, I could feel God’s presence and aura all around me. We also took part in a Catholic mass, and that was pretty cool, too. The museums were all extraordinary. I saw art pieces of modern artists and famous ones like Picasso and Chigall(sp?).

In San Francisco, me and a few friends decided to hit up the party scene. The first night, I went to a techno club and it was awesome. I’ve never been to a club since I turned 18, which was in late August, so I was excited to go to one for the first time. Clubs aren’t as bad as everyone makes them out to be. The next day, me and a few other friends from High Sierra went to a huge club with a dance floor that lit up different colors. We had such an amazing time at the club. We celebrated my friend’s birthday, who was Candace from High Sierra. She had a blast at the club, and I’m glad we could all spend time together just to deepen our relationship. Here’s some pictures from our time in San Francisco, ranging from our museum, cathedral, and club experiences. San Francisco is definitely a unique and awesome city!

Halloween Adventures at High Sierra!!!

JP Park Thursday, November 5th, 2009

HAPPY BELATED HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!!!!!! Halloween was a couple days ago, but I didn’t get a chance to blog since it was so busy!!(In a good way, of course)

Well, I woke up on Halloween pretty late, around 11 AM. I got some lunch, and then I had to get ready for Halloween Badmitten Doubles! You basically pair up with a partner, dress up as a famous couple, and then you play Badmitten against another team, and the winning couple wins a prize. It was so fun! I paired up with my good friend Naomi, and I dressed up as Barney(haha), and she dressed up as a little Kindergartner. It was single elimination with about 10 or more teams, and unfortunately, we lost our first game against our professors, Dave Williams and Rob Simpson. Here are some pictures from Halloween Badmitten!

Kiley as Mario, Katie as Princess Peach, and Rachel as Luigi!

Chelsea as Lois Lane, and Matt as SUPERMAN!

After Halloween Badmitten, all of us just chillaxed around and started getting ready for dinner. For dinner, we had the opportunity to dress up again. We just love dressing up here at High Sierra. We even dress up for dinners when it isn’t Halloween! It’s hilarious and super fun. Instead of dressing up as Barney again, I dressed up as a Surfer. There was a wetsuit in the costume closet they have here at High Sierra, which has a ton of costumes and props, so we take full advantage of it! Here are some pictures of us “High Sierrans” dressed up for Halloween Dinner!

After dinner, we had a Pumpkin carving contest. I worked with my partner, Rachel, or “Edward Scissorhands!”

After pumpkin carving, I had to do my on campus job, dishwashing!! I wasn’t looking forward to it because my friends were about to watch a scary movie in the movie room we have on campus here at High Sierra. They were all girls and they hate scary movies, so I really wanted to watch it with them so I could witness them scream and laugh my butt off. I love scary movies, so they don’t phase me at all. Fortunately, I washed all the dishes from the night super quick, and then ran to the movie room. They were only about 30 minutes in to the movie called “The Messangers”. After we watched that, we watched a movie called “See No Evil” that I brought from home about a guy who rips peoples’ eye balls off. It was so funny to me to see the girls all screaming and clinging onto my arm, but I’m pretty sure the girls had a hard time sleeping that night. All in all, I didn’t have much expectations for Halloween, especially when your in the mountains. But to my suprise, Halloween at Azusa Pacific is amazing, fun, and rad!!!!!! I have to go do homework now, but I will blog again soon!

Take care, and God Bless!! J.P

HOMECOMING WEEKEND= Best Weekend Ever!!!!!

JP Park Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Hey there readers, J.P here again! It’s about 11:00 PM right now, and I just came back from the APU Men’s Soccer game against Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California, which is only about an hour away from the High Sierra campus, which is in Bass Lake for those who don’t already know. Our soccer guys did amazing and we won 2-0!!!

The crowd was obviously full of Fresno students, but me and the other 7-9 High Sierra students still did some APU cheers like “You wish you were a Cougar! Azu!! Za!!! Azu!!! Za!!!” We got a couple of stares from the Fresno students, but we didn’t care. We love our college!

Anyway, back to the main topic: HOMECOMING WEEKEND!!!!! As you guys know, I’m in the High Sierra Semester program where unlike other freshman, I’m studying in the mountains on a satellite campus, instead of on main campus back at Azusa. After a couple months or so of not being back on main campus, we finally had a chance to go back to it for homecoming weekend. It was AMAZING!!! Here’s a rundown of what happened during my weekend at Main campus.

THURSDAY——

Around 4:30 PM, the High Sierra students (me) jump in the vans, and it takes us about 5-6 hours to drive to Azusa Pacific University. We get there around 10-11ish PM, and as soon as I get out of the van, I embrace my Trinity 2nd North hallmate Trevor. I can’t even make it to my room, which is in Trinity on 2nd North, because all of my friends I met during Orientation week in September keep on running up to me and giving me some love. It was awesome. After I finally get settled in my dorm room, I meet up with my really good friends, who are all in Men’s Chorale aka Man Choir, D-Lo, Sonny, Matt, and Omar. They took me out to Alberto’s, which is a delicious Mexican restaurant minutes away from APU. After we eat, we end up going to D-lo’s and Sonny’s dorm in Trinity, on the floor right below me, and we end up playing video games all night long. They had mid terms the next day, but they decided to stay up until 6:30 AM with me. I’m not sure if it was a great idea to stay up so late, but that’s the kind of friends they are….I love them…Which leads me to state that the friends you make at APU will be larger than life. Anyone who goes to APUĀ  can agree with me on this one.

FRIDAY—–

So me and my friends went to sleep at 6:30 AM, and we end up only getting around 2 hours of sleep because we have to go to chapel. After a great message in chapel, I meet up for lunch with my RA in Trinity 2nd North, Matt. He is an amazing RA(Resident Advisor), and we end up eating some grub at the Cougar Walk. (Quesadillas!) We catch up on life and he tells me about what’s going on at Main campus, and I fill him in on my semester so far at High Sierra. After lunch, I went to the Men’s Chorale open rehearsal they have every friday. I was supposed to be in Men’s Chorale this semester, but couldn’t because I’m now in the High Sierra semester, but next semester when I’m back on APU, I’ll be able to join my brothers again. I got to see all of my friends, or “brothers” sing and it was amazing. The sound was phenomenal and you can feel the worship tingling through your body. After watching them rehearse, I had a dessert date with some friends at a local frozen yogurt place, called Paradise Juice Cafe.

Later on during the day, the Men’s Chorale went on a night hike that I was a part of. We hiked the Colby Trail, not too far away from APU. At the start of our hike, each of the 70+ guys grabbed a small stone. We hiked up the trail in complete silence, and we were told to think about and reflect upon burdens, sins, and troubles we’re facing. Once we reached the end of the trail, there was a cross laid out in lit candles appearing among us. We each got markers and wrote down on our stone what our burden or sin was that was holding us back. Once we were done writing our sin on the stone, we all placed them at the foot of the cross. To symbolize we’re all brother of Christ, we each picked up a random stone and read what it said. Mine said “LUST”. After we read what our new stone said, the words were painted over in red, to symbolize that God’s blood washes away all sin. We all then lined up and threw the stones across a cliff as we all screamed and shouted. It was a memorable experience. Something that I won’t forget in a long, long, long time.

Once I got back to Main Campus, I saw my hall dressing up as Greeks, in togas with leaves on their heads. There was a “Decades” homecoming dance party, so my hallmates dressed me up as a Greek and we all marched outside in togas. It was hilarious. We stayed at the party for about half an hour, but then most of us left because the dance party didn’t really fit our taste. There was a lot of old music that I had trouble dancing to, and there weren’t alot of people there to begin with. I ended up chilling with some friends for the rest of the night, and ended up going to bed around 4 or 5 AM.

SATURDAY——–

After getting only a little bit of sleep, I woke up around noon to eat some lunch with my friends, Paul and Ian. We ended up going to a Thai restaurant across from APU that was delish. After lunch, I had to get ready for BED RACES!! Bed races is an event in where you are in a team of 5, and 4 people push a bed with the last teammate on the bed. You run to the end of the lane, and pick up a bed sheet, put it on the bed, and push the bed back to the starting line. The winning bed race team gets priority choice in housing during their next year, which is pretty sweet. I was in a team with my Hawaiian friends, and we dressed up as Hawaiians, obviously, and our team name was Boto Boto Sook Sook. Here’s a picture of us:

Boto Boto Sook Sook Bed Racing Team!!

Yes…..I didn’t have a hawaiin skirt for guys, so I borrowed a girly one from a girl, haha. In our first preliminary race, we didn’t do too well because our bed sheet had a huge tear in it, so we freaked out and took a lot of time putting the bed sheet over the bed, so our time sucked. During our 2nd try, we were paired up against one of the fastest teams. We did really well and were really fast, but the other team was just faster and we lost. We’ll get em’ next year though!

After lunch with my bed racing team at the Cougar Den, I chilled for a while and then went to the Tail Gate Party on Adam’s lawn, where I ate In n Out Burgers!! MMMM!! Me and my friend Jonny raced eachother on some of the air filled obstacle courses. There’s this trampoline-like air filled play thing we jumped in, and I jumped right next to little kids, and made them fall. No one got hurt though. It was just funny!!

I ended up not going to the Football game after the tail gate, but instead I hung out at the Mods with some of my High Sierra friends, and we ended up getting some Frozen yogurt (I love frozen yogurt). I headed back to my dorm in Trinity after and chilled with my boys, Omar, D-lo, Sonny, Jonny, and Matt. We met up with our friends Natalie and Rachel, and decided to do something fun for my last night on Main Campus. We drove to a hiking trail about half an hour from campus, and hiked on it in pitch black. We only had one flashlight, so it was pretty intense and scary because it was about midnight. After our hike, we went to place called “Gravity Hill”. Basically it’s this huge road on a hill where you drive on it, put your car in neutral, and the car ends up driving backwards by itself. It was pretty fun. I rode on top of the car for a little bit. We weren’t going fast at all, so it wasn’t dangerous ot anything… After Gravity Hill, we ate breakfast at Mcdonalds, right at 5 AM. After breakfast, we drove back to campus and played video games all night until morning. I stayed up the whole night and didn’t get any sleep…..

SUNDAY——–

I basically chilled around and said my goodbyes to everyone, including these two girls, Yolanda and Tiff.

Homecoming weekend

Homecoming weekend

I ate dinner at the Caff, and then my friends, D-Lo, Omar, Jonny, Rachel, and Deneva walked me to the vans to leave. I’m not going to lie, once I got into the vans I felt really sad, and upset. I had so much fun during my few days on campus and I didn’t want to leave my friends behind and go back to High Sierra. But in High Sierra, I already have made 22 best friends that I know I will have for a very very very long time. It was hard saying goodbye to my friends on main campus, but I’ll be back next semester, and they’ll still be there. But all in all, Homecoming weekend was a blast!!!!!!!! Don’t you see how much fun you guys will have if you come to Azusa Pacific University?! For any high school students or other people who are thinking about coming to APU and need advice, insight, or any help at all, feel free to leave me a comment and I’d be more than happy to help you guys out!!

Well, I have a mid term tomorrow so I need some sleep! Good night and God Bless, J.P!

Midterms! Ahh!!! I want my social life back!

JP Park Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Hey fellow APU people! So, as you can tell, I have mid terms this week! Oh no! Mid terms are basically like exams you take in the middle of your semester, and then you have final exams at the end of the semester. I just had my Aesthetics(Art) mid term, and even though it wasn’t that hard, it was still pretty challenging. I have another mid term tomorrow for Philosophy, and I think it’s going to be pretty difficult. Plato just confuses me sometimes….., and I am just not good at philosophical thinking. I’m more creative and visual, which is why I’m majoring in Theatre Arts..

So…studying for mid terms basically means I have to shorten the time I hang out with my friends, or hang out with them just to study, which is kind of awkward because I’m in a room with my friends studying, and we don’t even talk to each other!! Haha. Just the other weekend, I was studying with my friends here at High Sierra, Julie, and Sellika, and they said I was breathing too loud for them to study! Haha, and then they told me my stomach was growling too loud. It was pretty funny, because as much as we try to study, we can’t because we love to talk to each other. Just last night, I made facebook videos on their walls while I was studying in my room, and they made videos back while they were studying only like 300 feet away in their room. We sent videos back and forth on facebook of ourselves dancing to songs. I would post one on here, but they’re kind of embarrassing!

I cannot stress enough on how Azusa Pacific University is just amazing. The people here are great. The professors are great. The spirituality aspect is suprisingly great…it’s just a really really amazing college…Just last weekend, I went back to main campus for Homecoming weekend and it was probably the most amazing weekend ever, thanks to my 2nd North hall in Trinity, my really good friends on 1st North in Trinity, and my other campus friends and my brothers in Men’s Chorale, aka Man Choir. I’ll blog about my fun weekend back on the APU campus on my next blog. A part of me didn’t want to come back to High Sierra because of all the friends I left back on campus, but I know that High Sierra is exactly where I need to be this semester.

Thanks for reading and have fun this week! Halloween is comin’ up!

pumpkins and papers.

Ellie Kipps Monday, October 26th, 2009

My favorite season is fall, or at least it was in NorCal (where I’m from). I love when the leaves turn red and flutter down to the ground, and I love the crisp rain that speaks of hot cocoa and fireplaces and good books, but most of all, I love pumpkins: pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin ice cream, and most of all: pumpkin pie. This morning I woke up missing that fall feeling from home, and decided to make pumpkin bread with real pumpkin and a special blend of spices that my family uses. Now my apartment is filled with the smell of baking bread, and I’m feeling pretty homesick.

It is a weird thing to feel homesick as a sophomore in college, but I’m sure I’m not the only one, especially of those here at APU where there home isn’t close. I only can go home on the bigger breaks: thanksgiving, christmas, and easter break, whereas my roommates live under an hour away from campus. I love being away from home, college is a time to get away and learn about new people and new places, but there are days when I miss my northern california roots and my northern california seasons (if you are wondering what the weather is like here, Azusa has one perpetual season: warm, though, don’t worry, you can still get snow like half an hour away [don't ask me how that works, it just does]).

Last weekend, I got the chance to return to my beloved northern california and visit a place I’ve never been before: APU’s High Sierra Campus. Tucked away in the mountains, in the middle of the Ansel Adams Wilderness, seconds away from Bass Lake is this sprawling campus that is a Christian kids’ camp during the summer and one of theĀ satellite campuses APU has during the year. I honestly felt like I had been transported to Narnia (the kid’s camp has a Narnia themed disc golf course), and I was just waiting for Aslan to come out of the forest. It was beautiful.

The reason I went up there was to check out the campus for a preview weekend (like potential students do at main campus), and make sure it was where I should be next year. It is. My plan now is to spend my entire junior year up at High Sierra. Another one of the bloggers, JP, is a student up there right now, and it was pretty rad to get to meet him in person, after reading his blogs. He’s a great guy, and I see God working on him through being up at High Sierra, and that is a beautiful thing to see. It was good for me to be up there, to hike and shoot archery and read Karl Barth sitting on the porch overlooking the forest.

Here is a little movie I put together about my time at High Sierra, it’s silly and not well filmed, but oh well. And I also am including two other videos about High Sierra, one where our University’s President Jon Wallace (or J-Dub) talks about it, and also another one that the Study Abroad office put together. Have fun watching!

Alright, well, I have papers to write, so I’ll try to keep you updated as the semester continues to provide quite the challenge in the academic front!

Tuesdays are the new Mondays! :(

JP Park Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Hello there folks, J.P here again with another blog. As you can tell by the topic, I think Tuesdays are the new Mondays. In high school, we all hated Mondays because that was the day we went back to school, which meant our weekend finally came to an end. Well, for me, in college, I dread Tuesdays! I have a majority of my classes Tuesdays. Let me give you guys a run down of my schedule on Tuesdays so you guys can feel my pain. haha.

7:30 AM- I wake up. I take a shower, brush my teeth, the usual morning stuff. But, I am not a morning person at all, so waking up this early is basically torture for me. I usually go to bed early on Monday night since I have no classes.

8:00 AM- 10:00 AM- HEALTH CLASS! This is probably one of my favorite classes at Azusa Pacific thus far, mostly because I have an amazing professor called Don Lawrence. He used to be the director here at High Sierra a few years back, but now teaches Fit For Life and Health here at High Sierra. I highly recommend him as a professor because he is a totally rad and personable “dude”. haha. Where does breakfast fit in you ask? Basically after I finish getting ready, I grab my note book and text book and rush to the dining hall, and grab some food and carry it to Health class. Don doesn’t mind us being a couple minutes late, and he doesn’t mind us eating either.

10:00 AM- 11:30 AM- PLENARY CLASS- right after Health, I walk to Plenary class, which is just a class where all of the professors here give a lecture of their class and insight on their classes. It’s kind of hard to explain, but it’s like an introductory class

11:30 AM- 12:30 PM- LUNCH- Right after plenary class, I head to lunch. It’s pretty self explanatory. It doesn’t take me a full hour to eat, so I use the rest of my time prepping for my next class or just chilling or calling my parents.

12:30 PM- 2:00 PM- GREAT IDEAS CLASS- It’s a philosophy class and it’s probably the class that makes my wheels turn the most. Dave Williams teaches this class, and he’s a genius when it comes to Philosophy. I highly recommend you take his class whenever you come up to High Sierra. This class never fails to bore me. It’s engaging, and we have friendly debates and conversations about what were learning. We’re reading the Republic by Plato right now, and it makes me think a lot. I love this class

2:00 PM- 6:00 PM- FREE TIME! I am free for four hours basically for all of my Tuesdays. I usually kick it back and relax, start on homework, hang with friends, or just procrastinate. haha. 4 hours can really fly by past.

6:00 PM- 7:00 PM- DINNER – Self explanatory. We just have dinner and get to chillax and have much laughter at our dinner table.

7:00 PM- 10:00 PM- CHRISTIAN CLASSICS- I am burnt by this point, so Christian Classics is a hard class for me to pay attention in because I’m so exhausted from my day. I usually drink a coke for caffeine to keep me awake. Michael Robbins, aka DJ Robbins teaches this class and he is also amazing! He is a great guy. His voice is very relaxing and soothing, almost makes me want to fall asleep. He is really passionate about his teaching and it reflects the way he teaches. Christian Classics is a humanities class.

10:00 PM- 12:00 AM – WASHING DISHES- I have an on campus job here at High Sierra, where I have to wash dishes with another dish washer. We wash all of the plates and other stuff from dinner that night. It’s pretty fun cause you get to listen to music and talk with your other dish washer, but sometimes I hate it because I’m so tired, and ready for bed.

So basically my Tuesdays start from 7:30 AM and ends at midnight. But hey, I only have two classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and no classes on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, or Mondays. So I have it easy. But my friends here at High Sierra want to go Raccoon Hunting so I will see you guys later! We just spotted a lot of raccoons running all over the place so this night shall be fun!

Much love and God Bless, J.P!
