Finished with Pre-View Weekend, now back to College!

JP Park Monday, October 19th, 2009

Hey guys, J.P here again. A few days ago, I posted a blog about pre-view weekend at High Sierra, and now it’s unfortunately over. The students that all came up from the main campus from Azusa Pacific went back to campus Sunday morning. Pre-view weekend was so much fun. It’s a breath of fresh air when the student numbers here raise from 22 to 60+. I met some really cool and down to earth students during pre-view weekend, but I’ll be able to see them all next semester when I’m finished with High Sierra on the main campus at Azusa. Some of the students that came to pre-view weekend loved it (I think everyone loved it) and a handful of them are planning on coming Spring semester this year, which is a shame because I’ll be back on campus so I won’t be able to see them!

Anyway, for pre-view weekend, the High Sierra kids (me) hosted activities like Ultimate Frisbee, High ropes (Rock wall, cables, other fun activities up high in the trees), Kayaking, and Archery. After dinner, we played the game called “Murder Mystery” I was talking about in my previous post and it was so fun, scary, and a really great experience with students whom I’ve only met for about 2 days.

So basically, Murder Mystery is a game where there are a few “killers” on campus. No one knows who the “killers” are, so you can’t really trust anyone while your playing the game. Around campus, there are hidden messages that cover the campus. In order to win, you need to find and read all of the messages to find out who the killers are, who they killed, why they killed them, when they killed them, and how they killed them. There were about 12-15 messages in the dining hall, the weight room, the field, and the volleyball court. While we are all searching in the pitch black (all lights are turned off) with flashlights(so fun and scary!), there is music being played. When the music stops, we all have to freeze where we are at and turn off all of our flashlights. Then, the “JAWS” soundtrack comes on and the “killers” who are amongst us get to move and kill their next victim. They kill them by spraying them with a squirt gun, and if you get squirted you scream as loud as you can and fall down, and stay in your spot where you died for the remainder of the game…

This game was so much fun! I’m not really good at putting two and two together, so I worked with my 3 friends and we ran around finding all the messages. One time I was by myself in the volleyball court looking for a message, and the music turned off! I hid in the corner of a volleyball court and sat down. Across from me, I saw one of the “killers” squirting girls who hid together on the other end of the volleyball court. The killer walked past me and didn’t even see me. It was awesome.

Another time, I was with my 3 friends and the music turned off, so we hid under the dining hall porch which is pretty spacious. We hid behind these two half pipes for skateboarding that were stored under there and didn’t die that round. After we got the hang of the game, even before the music stopped, we hid about 1-2 minutes before the music actually stopped so we wouldn’t get ousted by the “killer”. After we found out who two of the killers were, we ran into them and we all started screaming. It was so funny! When 2 girls solved the murder, the game was over, even though me and my 3 friends were still alive. “Murder Mystery” was probably the high light of pre-view weekend.

Now, with the pre-view students gone, it’s back to the solid 22 students here at High Sierra. I have no classes today (High Sierra only has classes tues, wed, and thurs), but I have to get some philosophy and christian classics homework done. I also have my mid term for fit for life at 4 pm. We have to run a mile and half in less than 9 or 10 minutes. When we first got tested at the beginning of the semester, I ran it in over 12, which basically means failure. Since then, I’ve been keeping up with my fit for life journal, and I think I will do tons better than I did last time. I’ll let you guys know how I do in my next blog.

Well, I have some exciting news! This weekend is homecoming weekend!! The High Sierra students drive the 5 hour long ride back to the APU main campus, and we stay there from thursday night to sunday morning. I’m pretty stoked to see all of my friends I met during man choir camp (men’s chorale) and orientation week, as well as my roommate in Trinity 2nd north! I don’t how much I’ll be at the campus for. Two of my friends here at High Sierra want to do different stuff. One of them wants to take me to Knotts Berry farm because it’s October and they’re having the scare rides and mazes and all that. I’ve never been since I’m from Virginia. Another one of my friends wants me to go to L.A with her to get in the guiness book of world records for the most people doing the “Thriller” dance by Michael Jackson. At 5 pm on saturday I think, a lot of people are getting together in L.A with paint, costumes, the whole nine yards and are recording themselves dancing, and all across the world during the same time other countries are getting together and doing it too. I think they’re aiming for about 270,000 people to dance to the “Thriller” song. But, if I did it I would have to memorize the full 6 minutes of the song by myself. It would be really cool to get in the book of world records, but I haven’t made up my decision yet of what I want to do because I really miss my friends back on campus, but we’ll see…

Hope everyone has a good and blessed week. -J.P

Preview weekend at High Sierra!

JP Park Monday, October 19th, 2009

Hey there, J.P here again! Last night, 4 vans full of preview students who wanted to get a taste of the High Sierra Semester came up and are staying here for a couple of days. I had a chance to meet Elli, one of the bloggers on here, and she is amazing, and highly intellectual and down to Earth.

Me and the other High Sierra students mingled with the preview students and we had a Bon Fire on Star Rock. Star Rock is not too far from my cabin. It’s basically a large strip of flat land that is made of solid rock. We had smores and then went back to the Dining hall and played board games, more particularly, Apples to apples. If you haven’t played Apples to Apples, I suggest you go out and buy it because it’s an awesome ice breaker game. For those of you who do play it, like my friend Ashley Darrow says, “Helen Keller is the trump card of Apples to Apples”. I concur

Right now, the preview students are going on a tour around the campus. The High Sierra Semester campus here is basically a summer camp. During the summer, it’s a camp, but during the school year, they transform it into a college campus, or a satellite campus to be more exact. We still get wi-fi internet service, but cell phone service is pretty hard to get, but the service is always great up on Star Rock.

Later on during the day, the preview students and High Sierra Semester students are going to go on a hike, and then we’re going to do a lot of fun activities High Sierra provides every day like archery, kayaking, and mountain boarding. It’s refreshing to see some new faces after I’ve been seeing the same 21 faces everyday since I’ve been here.

Tonight, we’re going to eat dinner and play a game called “Murder Mystery”. I have no idea how to play it, but I heard it’s kind of like Clue or Sherlock Holmes. I can’t wait to play it tonight and I will tell you all about it on my next blog. My cameras broken at the moment, but I think my other friends have cameras to take pictures.

Two days ago, me and my High Sierra friends played sardines on the campus here. Here’s a picture of all of us:

Sleep= Vital for College!

JP Park Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Okay, J.P here again with a few words of wisdom to prospective college students and college students. As a freshman, I realized how important sleeping is!! Napping is probably what most college students do with their free time! The first few weeks of college during orientation week, there were hundreds of freshman and upper classmen on Trinity lawn until at least 5 or 6 am. It was crazy!

Now that the first weeks of exciting college life has cooled down, homework, procrastinating homework, and keeping a social life intact will probably keep you busy throughout the night, and in some cases, mornings. :(. For me, I have always been extroverted and really outgoing, so I usually would stay up to mingle with friends and just kick it back and relax. I would end up going to sleep around 1 am to about 3 am, and then wake up the next morning uber tired. Then, in my classes, I wasn’t as productive because I barely had any sleep.

After realizing how tired and unproductive I was in class, I knew as a college student, sleep is the number one thing that keeps us going. Instead of doing homework late and socializing with friends, you should sleep! Now, I try to go to bed around 11 pm or even 12 am, but that’s still a lot better than 2 or 3 am. The next morning I’m a lot more awake and energized for my day. You don’t realize how much a couple hours of extra sleep can do. I’m much more productive with homework and more engaging in classes when I get more sleep, and all my classes have participation grades.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s going to be times when you need to stay up late to study for finals, exams, etc, but prioritize your time efficiently. I have had such a hard time trying to prioritize my time between studying, doing homework, socializing, calling my parents and friends, working out, and even eating! College will either help you massively with time management, or break you.

I’m going to post another blog later during the week about my experience climbing HALF DOME! chyeah!

Good Night and God Bless, J.P!

When we say we barely have free time in College, we mean it!

JP Park Monday, October 12th, 2009

Hey, its J.P again!! Sorry I haven’t been blogging much, but as the title says, College is extremely busy!!!!

In case some of you readers don’t know already, I’m studying in the mountains near Yosemite for a semester long program called “High Sierra”, which is sort of like a study abroad program. For my Leadership class I have here at the “satellite campus”(campus that is not on the legit APU college) the 22 students here had to go on a 6 day trek in Ansel Adams(sp?) which is part of Yosemite. For 6 straight days, we have no classes, no internet, no phones, no showers, and worst of all, NO TOILETS!! It was a great experience; One of those things that you do once n a life time.My trek group for the grueling 6 day trek consisted of 9 other classmates and professors.

Here are some pictures from my 6 day trek!Me on the 6 day trek for High Sierra

Looking out to YosemiteSLab Lake in Yosemite

Some people from my trek group summiting a mountain!!

The 6 day trek was tons of fun!! I had a “Solo”, where I was by myself in the wilderness with only my sleeping bag and a few other things. I spent 24 hours by myself, and chose to fast the whole day by choice. In the 24 hours while I was on my “solo” time during trek, I have never felt more closer to God in my entire life. I spent the whole day in solitude, and spent a lot of the day appreciating God’s majestic creation and basking in the sun by the lake(a picture of it is above here).

Now, I’m back on campus with the 22 or so other students, and have been trying to transition back to the groove of the dreaded 6 classes I’m taking here at High Sierra. Don’t get me wrong, I love the classes that Azusa Pacific offers and I learn tremendously. The teachers here are amazing and are like mentors. A few of them that I can name off the top of my head are Dave Williams, Mike Robbins, and Tom Dunn. They are some rad professors!

I have had a difficult time trying to juggle my time wisely. In college, countless temptations get thrown your way and at times, it will be very difficult to turn them down. Instead of doing homework, I’m tempted to hang out with friends, watch a movie, play a game or sport, or even procrastinate on facebook! I barely seem to have time to call my parents and siblings back in Virginia, and even my roommate back on the APU campus.

All in all, College is the most amazing place on Earth, besides a church of course. :) I have met some quality friends here, and I have learned so much just as a person, and also as a Christian.

To close off, I’ll just explain what I did today to give you a taste of what college life is kind of like:

I woke up around 11 am because I didn’t have any  classes today, and then chilled with a few friends until it was time for lunch. I didn’t get a chance to eat breakfast since I woke up so late(Breakfast is around 8am here at the High Sierra). Then, my friend Rachel Eblin trimmed my hair with her own personal hair cuttery kit. After my trim, I went on a mini “field trip” with about 8 other students to Starbucks to study/work on homework. We could of just stayed on campus, but the track team from Azusa Pacific is here at High Sierra for a team building weekend or something, so there is constantly a lot of noise because of how much fun their having. The few of us who couldn’t concentrate, and the students who wanted to leave campus for a while decided to go to Starbucks and I got a lot of work done. It’s relaxing to get away from campus and the whole college environment for a while and just relax.

Right now, it’s about midnight and I’m typing this blog in the dining hall, which is filled with at least half of the guys and girls from the APU track team. I’m about to work on some homework(story of my life) and get some sleep.

I plan to blog more often, sorry for the abscence. Like I said, I barely have any free time, but I’ll make this blog job one of my priorities. :)

Night, J.P

Stressed as a college student?? Same here!!

JP Park Friday, September 25th, 2009

Hey there guys!! J.P here again with a few words of wisdom!

Well in case you didn’t already know, I’m a freshman here at Azusa Pacific University. Ironically, I’m not on the campus (The campus is pretty dope!), I’m at the semester long program called “High Sierra” where we study in the mountains and get to do outdoors-y stuff like go on a 6 day trek in Yosemite (We leave this Thursday which means no school for 6 days! hah)

Here’s a picture of the 23 students and teachers/mentors/friends here at the High Sierra program. It’s an amazing community:

high, sierra, freshman, experience, jp, park, yosemite, trek,

high, sierra, freshman, experience, jp, park, yosemite, trek,

Anyway, even though I have only been in college for a couple of weeks now, I’m already starting to slowly get stressed and even more stress. STRESS  SUCKS!! In college, you tend to get so busy with countless things such as SCHOOL WORK, clubs, sports, extracurricular activities, friends, and so on.

The most helpful tips I found out were obvious, of course. Here are some of them:

1. PRIORITIZE!!!! Always start and finish the things that are most important like class work like essays and reading books. I procrastinate A LOT, so the faster you finish your work, the faster you get to all of the other fun stuff APU offers. I can’t “stress” enough about how important it is to get the most important stuff out of the way first.

2. Make a “To do list”/ Calendar —-I always make a to do list with my homework for each class, upcoming events, and planning what days I can go out and have fun and whatever else. It helps a lot to see what you have already completed but crossing them off the list, and what you still need to do.

3. DON’T PROCRASTINATE!!!!!!!—–It’s so easy for a friend to stop by your dorm and want to chill or go out to lunch or dinner. I know it is hard to say no when all of your friends urge you to do something, BUT there will be plenty of countless opportunities to hang out and socialize. You have 4 years to do that! Grades and academics come first!!!

I could say a lot more, but none can come to mind right now. Haha.

The faster you do your class work, the sooner you’ll be able to do this:

Me, (JP) sleeping in my dorm

Hahahaha! Naps are even more amazing in college, except when you constantly have people knocking on your door to hang. But I don’t have to worry anymore since I”m here in the mountains for High Sierra semester.

College isn’t all fun and games…Don’t get me wrong…I LOOVVVEEE college, but there has to be a balance between socializing and studying/doing homework.

Just last night, I had to read 5 chapters (50 pages worth) and while I was reading, my roommates asked me if I wanted to go kayaking in the lake. I really wanted to go, but I knew had to finish reading…. Being productive means making compromises. The more you say no to your friends, the more they will respect your studying time.

Hope this helped a bit, ha! I need to go work out for my Fit For Life class, so lataz!

Greetings from a Freshman perspective!!!

Me (J.P) at Yosemite!

Me (J.P) at Yosemite!

Hey everyone!!! First off, my name’s J.P and I’m a freshman here at Azusa Pacific University! I’m from Virginia, so deciding to travel all the way to California was a HUGE decision, but I can say it has been the best decision I have made in my entire life.

For those of you who don’t know, there is a program at APU called the “High Sierra” program. For a semester, you get to live on the mountains at Bass Lake, CA with other students who can be in any grade level. You have the chance to rock climb, wake board, trek, hike, and even conquer Yosemite!!

Here’s a picture of the sunset here at High Sierra. It is so amazing

Sunset at Yosemite

Since I’m an out of state student, I really wanted to stay on campus and study there and make tons of friends and just live the “freshman life”, but through a series of countless events during my first few days at APU, I decided to do the “High Sierra” program.

So………here I am with only 22 other students up in the mountains!! I love being here. The community is just as awesome as it is back on main campus, just fewer people for sure! I literally went from having over 40 hallmates in the Trinity Hall dorm back on campus to 4 here at High Sierra!! But hey…it’s a good thing because you get to become so close with the few people here. I love each and every person that’s here with me, but unfortunately, I get extremely “campus sick” sometimes when I think of being on campus at Azusa

I find it extremely weird and awkward that I miss being on campus when I have only been there for a week and a half. But during that week and a half, I met so many amazing people. The community at APU is amazing!!! You are destined to make friends no matter what.

I have so much to blog about and I really want to give you guys still in high school and future transfer students a glimpse of what life is really like here at Azusa Pacific University, and not to mention the awesome things I’ve been up to!

For now, here’s a picture of my first football game at APU with my friends. I’ll definitely keep blogging!
