Midterms! Ahh!!! I want my social life back!

JP Park Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Hey fellow APU people! So, as you can tell, I have mid terms this week! Oh no! Mid terms are basically like exams you take in the middle of your semester, and then you have final exams at the end of the semester. I just had my Aesthetics(Art) mid term, and even though it wasn’t that hard, it was still pretty challenging. I have another mid term tomorrow for Philosophy, and I think it’s going to be pretty difficult. Plato just confuses me sometimes….., and I am just not good at philosophical thinking. I’m more creative and visual, which is why I’m majoring in Theatre Arts..

So…studying for mid terms basically means I have to shorten the time I hang out with my friends, or hang out with them just to study, which is kind of awkward because I’m in a room with my friends studying, and we don’t even talk to each other!! Haha. Just the other weekend, I was studying with my friends here at High Sierra, Julie, and Sellika, and they said I was breathing too loud for them to study! Haha, and then they told me my stomach was growling too loud. It was pretty funny, because as much as we try to study, we can’t because we love to talk to each other. Just last night, I made facebook videos on their walls while I was studying in my room, and they made videos back while they were studying only like 300 feet away in their room. We sent videos back and forth on facebook of ourselves dancing to songs. I would post one on here, but they’re kind of embarrassing!

I cannot stress enough on how Azusa Pacific University is just amazing. The people here are great. The professors are great. The spirituality aspect is suprisingly great…it’s just a really really amazing college…Just last weekend, I went back to main campus for Homecoming weekend and it was probably the most amazing weekend ever, thanks to my 2nd North hall in Trinity, my really good friends on 1st North in Trinity, and my other campus friends and my brothers in Men’s Chorale, aka Man Choir. I’ll blog about my fun weekend back on the APU campus on my next blog. A part of me didn’t want to come back to High Sierra because of all the friends I left back on campus, but I know that High Sierra is exactly where I need to be this semester.

Thanks for reading and have fun this week! Halloween is comin’ up!

pumpkins and papers.

Ellie Kipps Monday, October 26th, 2009

My favorite season is fall, or at least it was in NorCal (where I’m from). I love when the leaves turn red and flutter down to the ground, and I love the crisp rain that speaks of hot cocoa and fireplaces and good books, but most of all, I love pumpkins: pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin ice cream, and most of all: pumpkin pie. This morning I woke up missing that fall feeling from home, and decided to make pumpkin bread with real pumpkin and a special blend of spices that my family uses. Now my apartment is filled with the smell of baking bread, and I’m feeling pretty homesick.

It is a weird thing to feel homesick as a sophomore in college, but I’m sure I’m not the only one, especially of those here at APU where there home isn’t close. I only can go home on the bigger breaks: thanksgiving, christmas, and easter break, whereas my roommates live under an hour away from campus. I love being away from home, college is a time to get away and learn about new people and new places, but there are days when I miss my northern california roots and my northern california seasons (if you are wondering what the weather is like here, Azusa has one perpetual season: warm, though, don’t worry, you can still get snow like half an hour away [don't ask me how that works, it just does]).

Last weekend, I got the chance to return to my beloved northern california and visit a place I’ve never been before: APU’s High Sierra Campus. Tucked away in the mountains, in the middle of the Ansel Adams Wilderness, seconds away from Bass Lake is this sprawling campus that is a Christian kids’ camp during the summer and one of the satellite campuses APU has during the year. I honestly felt like I had been transported to Narnia (the kid’s camp has a Narnia themed disc golf course), and I was just waiting for Aslan to come out of the forest. It was beautiful.

The reason I went up there was to check out the campus for a preview weekend (like potential students do at main campus), and make sure it was where I should be next year. It is. My plan now is to spend my entire junior year up at High Sierra. Another one of the bloggers, JP, is a student up there right now, and it was pretty rad to get to meet him in person, after reading his blogs. He’s a great guy, and I see God working on him through being up at High Sierra, and that is a beautiful thing to see. It was good for me to be up there, to hike and shoot archery and read Karl Barth sitting on the porch overlooking the forest.

Here is a little movie I put together about my time at High Sierra, it’s silly and not well filmed, but oh well. And I also am including two other videos about High Sierra, one where our University’s President Jon Wallace (or J-Dub) talks about it, and also another one that the Study Abroad office put together. Have fun watching!

Alright, well, I have papers to write, so I’ll try to keep you updated as the semester continues to provide quite the challenge in the academic front!

Tuesdays are the new Mondays! :(

JP Park Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Hello there folks, J.P here again with another blog. As you can tell by the topic, I think Tuesdays are the new Mondays. In high school, we all hated Mondays because that was the day we went back to school, which meant our weekend finally came to an end. Well, for me, in college, I dread Tuesdays! I have a majority of my classes Tuesdays. Let me give you guys a run down of my schedule on Tuesdays so you guys can feel my pain. haha.

7:30 AM- I wake up. I take a shower, brush my teeth, the usual morning stuff. But, I am not a morning person at all, so waking up this early is basically torture for me. I usually go to bed early on Monday night since I have no classes.

8:00 AM- 10:00 AM- HEALTH CLASS! This is probably one of my favorite classes at Azusa Pacific thus far, mostly because I have an amazing professor called Don Lawrence. He used to be the director here at High Sierra a few years back, but now teaches Fit For Life and Health here at High Sierra. I highly recommend him as a professor because he is a totally rad and personable “dude”. haha. Where does breakfast fit in you ask? Basically after I finish getting ready, I grab my note book and text book and rush to the dining hall, and grab some food and carry it to Health class. Don doesn’t mind us being a couple minutes late, and he doesn’t mind us eating either.

10:00 AM- 11:30 AM- PLENARY CLASS- right after Health, I walk to Plenary class, which is just a class where all of the professors here give a lecture of their class and insight on their classes. It’s kind of hard to explain, but it’s like an introductory class

11:30 AM- 12:30 PM- LUNCH- Right after plenary class, I head to lunch. It’s pretty self explanatory. It doesn’t take me a full hour to eat, so I use the rest of my time prepping for my next class or just chilling or calling my parents.

12:30 PM- 2:00 PM- GREAT IDEAS CLASS- It’s a philosophy class and it’s probably the class that makes my wheels turn the most. Dave Williams teaches this class, and he’s a genius when it comes to Philosophy. I highly recommend you take his class whenever you come up to High Sierra. This class never fails to bore me. It’s engaging, and we have friendly debates and conversations about what were learning. We’re reading the Republic by Plato right now, and it makes me think a lot. I love this class

2:00 PM- 6:00 PM- FREE TIME! I am free for four hours basically for all of my Tuesdays. I usually kick it back and relax, start on homework, hang with friends, or just procrastinate. haha. 4 hours can really fly by past.

6:00 PM- 7:00 PM- DINNER – Self explanatory. We just have dinner and get to chillax and have much laughter at our dinner table.

7:00 PM- 10:00 PM- CHRISTIAN CLASSICS- I am burnt by this point, so Christian Classics is a hard class for me to pay attention in because I’m so exhausted from my day. I usually drink a coke for caffeine to keep me awake. Michael Robbins, aka DJ Robbins teaches this class and he is also amazing! He is a great guy. His voice is very relaxing and soothing, almost makes me want to fall asleep. He is really passionate about his teaching and it reflects the way he teaches. Christian Classics is a humanities class.

10:00 PM- 12:00 AM – WASHING DISHES- I have an on campus job here at High Sierra, where I have to wash dishes with another dish washer. We wash all of the plates and other stuff from dinner that night. It’s pretty fun cause you get to listen to music and talk with your other dish washer, but sometimes I hate it because I’m so tired, and ready for bed.

So basically my Tuesdays start from 7:30 AM and ends at midnight. But hey, I only have two classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and no classes on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, or Mondays. So I have it easy. But my friends here at High Sierra want to go Raccoon Hunting so I will see you guys later! We just spotted a lot of raccoons running all over the place so this night shall be fun!

Much love and God Bless, J.P!

Finished with Pre-View Weekend, now back to College!

JP Park Monday, October 19th, 2009

Hey guys, J.P here again. A few days ago, I posted a blog about pre-view weekend at High Sierra, and now it’s unfortunately over. The students that all came up from the main campus from Azusa Pacific went back to campus Sunday morning. Pre-view weekend was so much fun. It’s a breath of fresh air when the student numbers here raise from 22 to 60+. I met some really cool and down to earth students during pre-view weekend, but I’ll be able to see them all next semester when I’m finished with High Sierra on the main campus at Azusa. Some of the students that came to pre-view weekend loved it (I think everyone loved it) and a handful of them are planning on coming Spring semester this year, which is a shame because I’ll be back on campus so I won’t be able to see them!

Anyway, for pre-view weekend, the High Sierra kids (me) hosted activities like Ultimate Frisbee, High ropes (Rock wall, cables, other fun activities up high in the trees), Kayaking, and Archery. After dinner, we played the game called “Murder Mystery” I was talking about in my previous post and it was so fun, scary, and a really great experience with students whom I’ve only met for about 2 days.

So basically, Murder Mystery is a game where there are a few “killers” on campus. No one knows who the “killers” are, so you can’t really trust anyone while your playing the game. Around campus, there are hidden messages that cover the campus. In order to win, you need to find and read all of the messages to find out who the killers are, who they killed, why they killed them, when they killed them, and how they killed them. There were about 12-15 messages in the dining hall, the weight room, the field, and the volleyball court. While we are all searching in the pitch black (all lights are turned off) with flashlights(so fun and scary!), there is music being played. When the music stops, we all have to freeze where we are at and turn off all of our flashlights. Then, the “JAWS” soundtrack comes on and the “killers” who are amongst us get to move and kill their next victim. They kill them by spraying them with a squirt gun, and if you get squirted you scream as loud as you can and fall down, and stay in your spot where you died for the remainder of the game…

This game was so much fun! I’m not really good at putting two and two together, so I worked with my 3 friends and we ran around finding all the messages. One time I was by myself in the volleyball court looking for a message, and the music turned off! I hid in the corner of a volleyball court and sat down. Across from me, I saw one of the “killers” squirting girls who hid together on the other end of the volleyball court. The killer walked past me and didn’t even see me. It was awesome.

Another time, I was with my 3 friends and the music turned off, so we hid under the dining hall porch which is pretty spacious. We hid behind these two half pipes for skateboarding that were stored under there and didn’t die that round. After we got the hang of the game, even before the music stopped, we hid about 1-2 minutes before the music actually stopped so we wouldn’t get ousted by the “killer”. After we found out who two of the killers were, we ran into them and we all started screaming. It was so funny! When 2 girls solved the murder, the game was over, even though me and my 3 friends were still alive. “Murder Mystery” was probably the high light of pre-view weekend.

Now, with the pre-view students gone, it’s back to the solid 22 students here at High Sierra. I have no classes today (High Sierra only has classes tues, wed, and thurs), but I have to get some philosophy and christian classics homework done. I also have my mid term for fit for life at 4 pm. We have to run a mile and half in less than 9 or 10 minutes. When we first got tested at the beginning of the semester, I ran it in over 12, which basically means failure. Since then, I’ve been keeping up with my fit for life journal, and I think I will do tons better than I did last time. I’ll let you guys know how I do in my next blog.

Well, I have some exciting news! This weekend is homecoming weekend!! The High Sierra students drive the 5 hour long ride back to the APU main campus, and we stay there from thursday night to sunday morning. I’m pretty stoked to see all of my friends I met during man choir camp (men’s chorale) and orientation week, as well as my roommate in Trinity 2nd north! I don’t how much I’ll be at the campus for. Two of my friends here at High Sierra want to do different stuff. One of them wants to take me to Knotts Berry farm because it’s October and they’re having the scare rides and mazes and all that. I’ve never been since I’m from Virginia. Another one of my friends wants me to go to L.A with her to get in the guiness book of world records for the most people doing the “Thriller” dance by Michael Jackson. At 5 pm on saturday I think, a lot of people are getting together in L.A with paint, costumes, the whole nine yards and are recording themselves dancing, and all across the world during the same time other countries are getting together and doing it too. I think they’re aiming for about 270,000 people to dance to the “Thriller” song. But, if I did it I would have to memorize the full 6 minutes of the song by myself. It would be really cool to get in the book of world records, but I haven’t made up my decision yet of what I want to do because I really miss my friends back on campus, but we’ll see…

Hope everyone has a good and blessed week. -J.P

Preview weekend at High Sierra!

JP Park Monday, October 19th, 2009

Hey there, J.P here again! Last night, 4 vans full of preview students who wanted to get a taste of the High Sierra Semester came up and are staying here for a couple of days. I had a chance to meet Elli, one of the bloggers on here, and she is amazing, and highly intellectual and down to Earth.

Me and the other High Sierra students mingled with the preview students and we had a Bon Fire on Star Rock. Star Rock is not too far from my cabin. It’s basically a large strip of flat land that is made of solid rock. We had smores and then went back to the Dining hall and played board games, more particularly, Apples to apples. If you haven’t played Apples to Apples, I suggest you go out and buy it because it’s an awesome ice breaker game. For those of you who do play it, like my friend Ashley Darrow says, “Helen Keller is the trump card of Apples to Apples”. I concur

Right now, the preview students are going on a tour around the campus. The High Sierra Semester campus here is basically a summer camp. During the summer, it’s a camp, but during the school year, they transform it into a college campus, or a satellite campus to be more exact. We still get wi-fi internet service, but cell phone service is pretty hard to get, but the service is always great up on Star Rock.

Later on during the day, the preview students and High Sierra Semester students are going to go on a hike, and then we’re going to do a lot of fun activities High Sierra provides every day like archery, kayaking, and mountain boarding. It’s refreshing to see some new faces after I’ve been seeing the same 21 faces everyday since I’ve been here.

Tonight, we’re going to eat dinner and play a game called “Murder Mystery”. I have no idea how to play it, but I heard it’s kind of like Clue or Sherlock Holmes. I can’t wait to play it tonight and I will tell you all about it on my next blog. My cameras broken at the moment, but I think my other friends have cameras to take pictures.

Two days ago, me and my High Sierra friends played sardines on the campus here. Here’s a picture of all of us:

Sleep= Vital for College!

JP Park Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Okay, J.P here again with a few words of wisdom to prospective college students and college students. As a freshman, I realized how important sleeping is!! Napping is probably what most college students do with their free time! The first few weeks of college during orientation week, there were hundreds of freshman and upper classmen on Trinity lawn until at least 5 or 6 am. It was crazy!

Now that the first weeks of exciting college life has cooled down, homework, procrastinating homework, and keeping a social life intact will probably keep you busy throughout the night, and in some cases, mornings. :(. For me, I have always been extroverted and really outgoing, so I usually would stay up to mingle with friends and just kick it back and relax. I would end up going to sleep around 1 am to about 3 am, and then wake up the next morning uber tired. Then, in my classes, I wasn’t as productive because I barely had any sleep.

After realizing how tired and unproductive I was in class, I knew as a college student, sleep is the number one thing that keeps us going. Instead of doing homework late and socializing with friends, you should sleep! Now, I try to go to bed around 11 pm or even 12 am, but that’s still a lot better than 2 or 3 am. The next morning I’m a lot more awake and energized for my day. You don’t realize how much a couple hours of extra sleep can do. I’m much more productive with homework and more engaging in classes when I get more sleep, and all my classes have participation grades.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s going to be times when you need to stay up late to study for finals, exams, etc, but prioritize your time efficiently. I have had such a hard time trying to prioritize my time between studying, doing homework, socializing, calling my parents and friends, working out, and even eating! College will either help you massively with time management, or break you.

I’m going to post another blog later during the week about my experience climbing HALF DOME! chyeah!

Good Night and God Bless, J.P!
