And So the Track Season Begins

Staphon Monday, February 15th, 2010

It has been about a month since Track season started for APU.

Trying to figure out how to blog about the meets without seeming like I’m bragging or whatever has been a challenge that has been swimming and swimming around my head.

For those of you who don’t know, I am the Jump Captain for our Track team here at APU. My events are the High Jump, Long Jump, and quite recently… the Heptathlon… but we will get there later.

Meet one:

Since I was planning to be at a Staff Retreat in Palm Springs the next day, I needed to compete the day before, so, I decided to do the first half of the Hep which is the 60 meter Dash, Long Jump, Shot Put, and High Jump.

60m Dash went well, got 3rd in my Heat.

Long Jump went well, only one to jump passed 7 meters, and I qualified for Nationals.

Shot Put… Fouled out.

High Jump… well, I jumped 2.14 (7 1/4ft) which is the first time I have done it officially, making me one of only 4 jumpers in APU history to jump over 7 feet and bumped my APU record to 3rd Highest jumper to ever attend our University. At the end of the day, I was really happy with my performance.

Meet 2:

Fresno State. Not a happy meet for me. I spoke to my Psychology of Personality professor the next week about it, and how it relates to Adler’s theories on Superiority and how some people need things to be perfect and are not happy with average results and I definitely began to realize that I am a bit of an over achiever… oh well.

I Long Jumped only 6.80m or so and High jumped 6’8. Unacceptable by my standards, but the conditions for the High Jump was as Hugh Grant would say “Utter Rubbish”

Meet 3:

Somehow my coach talked me into doing a complete Heptathlon. I am still not recovered from it and my whole body hurts, but somehow I ended up winning.

Score: 4883!

Now, I have a huge decision resting on my shoulders. Since I definitely qualified in the Hep, do I do this event at nationals, seeing as how Day 2 will end at the same time as the open high jump and right after will be the open Long Jump. If I feel anything close to how I’m feeling now, I’m not sure I’ll be able to do well in either of those… however, I have heard Tell that it HAS been done before… I have only a short while to make the decision… maybe it will be easier to decided when every sneeze doesn’t make my body want to fall apart.

Videos to come.
