HIGH SIERRA

So I went up to high sierra to see my good friend Mandy about a week ago. High Sierra is the APU campus up in Yosemite. I told Mandy that I was coming by myself to just visit and hang out with her for the weekend, but what she didnt know is that I brought along her two good friend that she went to high school with in Ecuador.Leah (who goes to APU with me) and Amber (a really cool Biola student) drove up after traffic on Friday afternoon. We made pretty good time considering we didn’t know where we were going. We stopped at this sweet gas station where they had this bench with some sweet old people.

Amber and Leah with the sweet old folk

That lady kinda got mad at me

The next day we wanted to do something in the snow, so we went snow shoeing up in Badger Pass. Since it was only my second time seeing snow I wasn’t sure about the whole snowboarding thing but still wanted to play in the snow. We hiked for a while checkin out the mts and havin a blast.

 Badger Pass

Leah, Mandy, and myself about to jump on the lift

Thats the trail we went snow shoeing on

So I turned around for a minute and the girls threw a whole mess of snowballs at me

 The whole group in Yosemite

 The beautiful sunset

That night we got back and took part in the planned activity for the night:
 Crazy hat bingo!

Check out the sweet hats we got from this hidden closet up at High Sierra. Oh and by the way, that awesome Civil Air Patrol outfit I have on, I got at the local thrift store for $4. What a buy.

Well what can I say, I was excited for this event. I mean come on….its BINGO! My bingo team…we had it goin on. We just knew how to play the game and were on a winning streak.

This is my bingo team and we rocked it.

High Sierra is an amazing opportunity that other schools don’t have; it’s a chance to study up in the mountains, go on hikes as you please, go on ropes courses, ski, and all the cereal, coffee and soda you can imagine. Plus it’s a great chance to grow a close knit group of friends and satisfy that outdoorsman in you.

pumpkin carving

Well, tonight I had a event with my residents...PUMPKIN CARVING! I found a place around campus that sold me some pumpkins really cheap so I bought pumpkins for my residents and set them outside and let the creation begin. I am not a big Halloween fan myself. The past 4 years I have not attended any parties or gone trick or treating, mostly because the day after I had huge races for Cross Country. So tonight I had the oppurtunity to carve a pumpkin and I was not sure what to cut into it. I drew out a couple designs, things to me that seemed funny but interesting, such as a muffi (which i find myself eating often), a runner, one of my catch phrases "Shazam", and the regular jack-o-lantern. So pretty much I just went after it and cut out a jack-o-lantern with a buck tooth.

From what I remember, carving a pumpkin was all about using a good ol knife, but apparently I've missed out on some things in life and now knifes aren't enough. As you can see in the picture, one of my residents Matt busted out a drill tool that allowed him to cut his desgin in no time flat as well as making curves and circles perfect as could be.

Here are some pictures of the marvelous creations that my residents made:

Noah is responsible for this piece, not really sure what it is but he had fun with it

All in all we had a blast! I love my residents, hangin out with them is such a breath of fresh air. Weekly events are a great time for them to relax, make new friends, share stories, and just enjoy being at college.

Mid Terms

The past week for me proved to be very difficult. I had mid terms in 3 of my classes. Mid Terms are usually one of two huge tests that you will have in a class. It comes about half way through the semester and usually covers the information learned to that point. These tests take up many hours and late nights of studying to be prepared for. My midterm for my Intro to LIterature class required me to write 8 essays in class in an hour! My hand was cramped bad but I got it done and hopefully I did as well as I think I did.

On Monday, I had my weekly event for my residents. As RAs we are required to hold a weekly event for our residents to build community, friendships, enjoy fellowship of one another, and also build strength. My event this week was Waffle House! I made waffles for each resident and had syrup and whip cream for them to top them with. Weekly events are a great chance for residents to have a break from studying and catch up with other residents. I am going to start asking a question every week to learn more about my residents as well as showing them more of myself. This week I borrowed a question from a fellow RA, Alex. The question is "What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen with your own two eyes?" This question stirred deeper conversation and learning about where others have been on this planet. Some spoke of sunsets, others of american landmarks such as the Grand Canyon, and others of hometown favorites. Since it is Halloween for my next weekly event, I am going to be doing pumpkin carvings with my residents. I will post pictures next week of the pumpkins.

Its good to have family

Well this week turned out to be a long and tiring one for me. I seemed to have had more meetings and homework than previous weeks but more importantly, my sister came and visited me! My older sister, Aja, flew from New York City to hang out with me for three days. We had a blast! I took an afternoon trying to teach my sis how to longboard. Let's just say she eventually learned how to ride after a few times of falling on her butt.

Aja is 23 years old and has been living on her own as a private chef in NYC after graduating from University of Florida. Heres a fun fact for ya... I was born on my sisters 4th birthday! So YES we have the same birthday and I like to say that she got the best birthday present ever!

I am not sure when is the next time I will see my sister, so I soaked in every minute I could because she is on her way to Fiji and then to Australia doing her thing. She loves to travel and see the world, so she's doing it. Hopefully sometime soon we will be traveling somewhere together.

It has begun...

So the year has officially started! Well, before I get into things, I feel I must introduce myself. I am from San Antonio, Texas and am in my second year at APU. Throughout this year, I will be telling y'all about my life and experiences at APU. This year I am an RA (resident advisor) of L Court in the Shire Mods as well as a member of the Cross Country and Track team. As the year goes on I'll be telling y'all about those things as well as others.
