Ignorance is not bliss

Yesterday, I attended CCLC (Christian College Leadership Conference), which is a huge conference for over 1,000 student leaders from APU, Cal Baptist, Point Loma, Bethany, Vanguard, etc. I went specifically because I will be planning large-scale events that promote diversity awareness as a MESA Co-Leader through the Multi-Ethnic Programs Office. I realized throughout CCLC that APU is of the rarer Christian colleges that offer diversity programs. I don't say this to bash other schools or use this as an admissions tool, but in all honesty, it really devastates me to hear so many students at other schools don't have many (if any at all) multi-cultural organizations.

Throughout the different seminars I chose to go to, there were a lot of great issues brought up. Some students didn't understand why ethnic organizations should exist. Some saw diversity programs as useful tools in helping them learn more about those different from themselves. Some cringed at the word "diversity" and didn’t think it was a topic worth discussing.

But on a college campus, I feel it is absolutely valuable for students to interact with people who think, act, and live differently. And on a Christian campus, I feel it is absolutely necessary for students to care about the differences of others (these differences that help form who a person is) in order for true love to happen.

There are some things that are very discouraging for me. Discrimination against a certain race, social class, gender, or etc. happens and people get deeply wounded ( ..and yes, this does still happen on Christian campuses too.) But what disappoints me the most is when I encounter people who are honestly oblivious that these kind of injustices exist and don't care to know more about it. Ignorance is NOT bliss. Ignorance hurts. A lot. If we claim to love God and the people he created, then shouldn’t we not be ok or comfortable with being ignorant? Shouldn’t we care to know how to love better, understand more, and hurt less? By no means am I any kind of expert on diversity issues, but I am sure that God has no limits to his love. But sometimes that is something we do whether we mean to or not. I pray that we would continue to question and refuse to be apathetic toward diversity issues. Thank God that he created a beautifully colorful and flavorful world when He could have just made it homogeneous and gray.

Spring Break

APU offers a 4 trips a year called LA 101, which is run through the MAS office. I was fortunate enough to go on it this Spring break, and it was truly amazing. For 4 days, we explored LA and talked about social injustice issues. We visited homeless ministries, a jail, after school programs, a women's center, an art museum, sweatshops in the fashion district, and lots of non-profit organizations. We stayed at Eco-Village, an apartment complex where residents form a close knit community and recycle pretty much everything and their mom and are really environmentally consious. On this trip, many of us were exposed to the ideas of modern-day American sweatshops for the first time, or it was the first time some of us went down to Skid Row and saw the overwhelming amount of homeless individuals.

But for me, I saw Jesus through the hands of the volunteers and through the many non-profits throughout the trip (yes, even the non-Christian organizations). It can be really discouraging when I learn about something else wrong in the world, but seeing all these outlets of hope really encouraged and inspired me. Some of the people I met gave up so much in their lives (money, worldly success, comfort, family) and dedicated it to their passion to serve others. I am so inspired to do likewise and am so grateful for the hope I got through what I saw on this trip. The harvest is plenty so I hope God continues to stir in our hearts what is stirred in His so that we can be the passionate workers in His field that He has called us to be.

411 on ASB

PHEW! Well, this has been an intense couple weeks. I'm running for ASB President for the 2008-2009 school year. It's just been crazy and exciting getting together with my running mates and forming posters, flyers, ect. It's all over now, though. Elections are done on our online Cougar's Den account from tomorrow until Wednesday.

ASB is the Associated Student Body. It's not really like high school ASB, but it's a lot more of a student government.. It's completely run by students and not by hired staff or faculty. ASB is here to serve as the liason between the student voice and the administration. Being a part of it is a great opportunity for students to use their passions to produce constructiveness on our campus. So if you happen to be a self-motivated go-getter and want to be plugged into a group on campus, ASB is a great place to go. (Limited positions to be in the House of Representatives are open to freshman and transfers.)

Cheap but Fun Weekend

Ok, so let's be honest, what college kid isn't looking for a cheap weekend of fun? I came to college worried I wouldn't have enough money to have a lot of fun, but turned out to be such a myth. This weekend I had a blast and I only spent $4!

So Friday night, my friends and I got dressed just for the heck of it. We had a bomb Asian food feast, which I made right in our little mod. Then we went out to Pasadena (just a 15 min. car ride away), which is always fun to just walk around and watch the street entertainers and peek in the shops. Then we had dessert at the Cheesecake Factory (that's where the $4 comes in.) On Saturday, my roommate had some students she's involved in a ministry with come over, and we had a blast running around with 10-15 junior high school kids. After playing on the tree swing in our Shire-mods courtyard, we all went to Gospel Sing. It's this annual night of worship that the Multi-Ethnic Programs Office heads up. It's one of my favorite events of the year and our school flies in great Christian musical artists from all over the country...and it was FREE! And then on Sunday, I played raquetball for the first time with my roommates, and it was such a fun way to get a work out! One of my roommates is taking Raquetball as a PE course just for fun, so we had access to the courts for free too!

All in all, it's very much possible to have fun without much money, especially when you take advantage of what's offered through school or the community around you! :P

(PS- prospective students, the MEL Scholars coordinate a lot of Gospel Sing, and the MEL Program would be a great opportunity to look into if you are an advocate for diversity and are in need of a scholarship.)

Junkett

Here's for another random weekend of fun:

So my friend was this amazing high school journalist in Minnesota and got to do interviews with celebrities. This weekend, she was asked to do a junkett for Spiderwick and Step Up 2. I was fortunate enough to go to the screening of Step Up 2 the night before the interviews with her. The screening was at this theater, and we weren't expecting to see any actors or anything, but as we walked out into the hall after the movie was over, there the director and dancers and actors were! Being from the midwest, I guess this is kind of a rare occasion for me. Welp, guess you'll never know when you'll run into some celebrities here in Southern California!!

Confetti

Life is more fun in color. My mod is colorful. I prefer colored post-its. I think it's ridiculously funny when my lips turn blue from cotton candy.

So this past weekend was REAL good. :)

Friday, I had a renunion with my old friends from my hall freshman year, who've all just gotten back from their study abroad trips in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Lithuania, etc. It was so fun!!! I love those girls!

Then, a bunch of friends came over for a crazy night of games! Though Catchphrase , Blokus, and Nertz is fun, nothing can beat the excitement of Guesstures.

Saturday, my friends had a potluck and then afterwards, I went to my friend's birthday party. It's so nice to relax and have fun at a real house :)

Sunday, my roommates threw me a surprise 21st birthday party! It was a video scavenger hunt, and it was so fun running around all over the place: on campus, off campus, wearing crowns from Burger King, serving doughnuts at Donut Man, making a pyramid at Garcia Trail, posing at Legends 50's Diner, caroling with grocery stockers at Stater Brothers, etc.

And now I sit here, reflecting on my fun weekend while chomping on a piece of colorful confetti cake.

Coming back

Winter break was so amazing. It was just enough time to see all my friends back at home in Chicago and spend time with my family. I'm back on campus now because all RA's had to come back on January 2nd for spring training. It's been soooo much fun hanging out with them and playing Blokus and Nertz and running around in the rain (There's been a ton of rain lately, which is fun since it's rare). Now, I'm excited to see all my residents again and have my roommates move back in! I'm getting a whole mod full of new residents since a group of guys just left for our South Africa semester. I'm so excited for this semester, EEE!!!!!

Phew! Finals are over!!! I love that liberating feeling I get after I finish finals. It’s so much more fulfilling to have studied and written papers to the max of my abilities and then sit back, stress free.

And now I’m back in Chicago, sooo glad to be back with my family and eating mom’s amazing Korean cooking! I love home, but going to a school so far away makes me really glad I did it this way. I think different people have different needs, but I recommend others to venture out too if possible. The distance has made me tons more aware of, grateful for, and anticipatory towards “home.” And as for the challenges that come with being far from home... well, the more of a challenge, the more of an opportunity to grow.
God is greater than my pride.

God is greater than my pride. Who are we to honor ourselves because of the talents we posses or the acomplishments we've made or the things we've been privileged with? Or what makes us so great that we choose not to be obedient to God? Our pride only steals from God's glory. I think its one of the ugliest qualities humans posses, yet I'm so engulfed in it. Whoever is reading this, I hope we can both have it instilled in us that Christ freed us from this ugly habit of pridefulness. We can live in the freedom of servitude. It may sound like an oxy-moron, but it truly is the most liberating way to live!!!

Shire Events Calendar

WOW! LIfe has been crazy in the Shire Modulars lately! This isn't a typical calendar of events (it's been especially busy in the Shire but these events don't even include everything else that happens on campus outside of our living area), but I just thought some of you might appreciate knowing what some of the events are like. Residents pick and choose what they want to go to, ranging from our court bowling, to community worship, to an all campus Christmas festival, to a Get Your Roommate A Date night!
