Pop Culture and Spiritual Formation -- Oil and Water?

How does the song "All About That Bass" or the movie "Divergent" relate to spiritual formation? Rather than writing off pop cluture, might Christians thoughtfully engage pop culture as a means of growing in Christ and loving the owlrd? What cautions or skills might be needed for such a project?
