Coram Deo Event: Christian Salvation and World Religions

Christianity and its surrounding culture have always had a paradoxical relationship. The call to love those who are different from us and to accept others has often seemed to be in conflict with the biblical call to be “in the world, but not of it,” to “be holy as God is holy,” and “to occupy until Christ comes.” This year, Coram Deo will discuss a series of issues where the church must negotiate its apparently contradictory values of acceptance and holiness, and the sacred and profane. Join us as we discuss our responsibility to navigate the duality of our humanity with our divine calling and its implications in the real world.

 "Christian Salvation and World Religions"

Discussion Panel:

Justin Marc Smith—Biblical Studies

Paul Hertig—Global Studies

Greg Moder—Practical Theology

Kay Higuera Smith—Biblical & Religious Studies

Jacquelyn Winston—Moderator, Theology

Coram Deo will present a faculty panel discussion as part of the yearlong theme "Pluralism, Christianity & the Postmodern World."  An interdisciplinary panel from Biblical & Religious Studies, Global Studies, Practical Theology, Internationalization, and Theology will discuss "Christian Salvation and World Religions".  Is it arrogant to believe the bibl's suggestion that Christ alone is the way to know God?  If we say that "Love Wins" does that mean that any view other than universalism is an example of a hateful and vengeful view of God?  Then how should Christians talk about other religions and interact with them in our pluralistic World?  How do we reconcile Chritianity's history of triumphalism with the belief in the singular nature of Christ's redemption?  The call to love and respect everyone and the belief in Christ's role as Savior do not have to be mutually exclusive.  Join us as we unpack these challenging questions about faith and its place in our world.
