This year for the first time, APU is hosting the Los Angeles County Math Field Day!
The University Libraries' Educational Programming department, the Center for Research in Science (CRIS), and the Department of Mathematics and Physics are partnering to host the event for the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
A Contest to Demonstrate Knowledge of Math Through Competition and Celebration
LACOE’s Math Field Day is designed as an enrichment activity to promote mathematical reasoning, teamwork and a balanced mathematics curriculum for all students in upper elementary and middle school. Participation allows students to demonstrate their math knowledge through competition in the following elements: computational and procedural skill, conceptual understanding and problem-solving. It is open to 4-person teams of students in grades 4-8 attending traditional or charter schools in Los Angeles County.
The STEM Festival is an after competition celebration where each grade level experiences a fun activity that does not have to relate to math.
Examples from past STEM Festivals by grade level:
4th Grade: Robotics; Environmental Photography
5th Grade: Molecular Gastronomy
6th Grade: Computer Programming; Video Game production; Flight Simulations
