Campus Safety to Crack Down on Unsecured Bicycles
Due to the recent rash of stolen bicycles on-campus, Campus Safety has taken a proactive approach toward unsecured and unregistered bicycles on campus.
From September to present, there have been a total of 13 bicycles stolen from APU students across the campuses. Only three were registered with this department, and five were secured with some type of lock. Out of the five locked bicycles, two of them were improperly secured (lock and chain only through a tire and the bike frame), and the other three had inexpensive cable which was cut.
One of the best manufactured and versatile bicycle locks today is a "U-shaped" unilock.
Article 9 of the APU Department of Campus Safety Vehicle Code states three specific items pertaining to bicycles on campus. In an effort to stop the thefts of bicycles, Campus Safety officers will be giving bicycle warning cards, and possibly confiscating bicycles for safekeeping or immobilizing them with a Campus Safety lock so they cannot be moved.
All bicycles are required to be registered with the Department of Campus Safety. In the unfortunate event that a bicycle is stolen the information which is vital to possibly help identify the stolen bicycle is on hand. This important information includes the make, model, and serial number stamped into the bicycle's frame.
