Adjunct Instructor
Center for Adult and Professional Studies
Profile
Kathleen Berk, M.A., has a special interest and extensive background in teaching adult learners. She taught re-entry adults at Mt. San Antonio Community College for 22 years, specializing in equipping student populations with the writing and study skills needed to navigate a successful return to the educational community. At Azusa Pacific University, Berk first worked in the Learning Enrichment Center for 12 years as the coordinator of freshmen proficiency testing. As an assistant professor in the Department of English, she taught freshmen in the areas of reading and writing during this time. For the past three years, she has been an adjunct professor for the Human Development Program in the Center for Adult and Professional Studies. She teaches Humans and Communications, the first module in this program, which utilizes her skills in working with adult learners adjusting to university-level work. Her goals in this class are to help students gain the confidence necessary to tackle an accelerated degree program, and to establish a learning environment that encourages the students to form a supportive community, aiding their ability to succeed in a high-pressure program. Berk is the portfolio specialist for the Human Development Program, presenting instructional sessions to each cohort in preparation of a comprehensive portfolio of their work in the program. She meets individually with each student at the conclusion of their program when students present their portfolios.
