Yearly Events
Visit Day
The APU Visit Day is an exciting opportunity for the fourth grade students to visit a college campus and take a tour with their C.H.A.M.P. mentors. The tour may include, but is not limited to, a visit to the library, bookstore, multi-ethnic programs, classrooms, residence halls, and a run around the track. This visit day tour provides the fourth grade students with a first-time glimpse at what life is like on a college campus.
Graduation
At the end of the C.H.A.M.P. program, the fourth grade students attend a graduation ceremony in their honor. The ceremony begins with a procession of the graduating fourth grade class followed by the presentation of a diploma to each student along with an announcement of their chosen future career. A fourth grade student from each school is selected to read an essay they wrote about their experience in the C.H.A.M.P. program. A slideshow about the C.H.A.M.P. program, designed by the fourth grade teachers, is a highlight of the evening. Following the graduation ceremony there is a reception for the fourth grade students, their mentors, and families.
C.H.A.M.P. Alumni Association Picnic
Each spring, former C.H.A.M.P. students and their families join with current and past APU mentors for a day of fun, food, and games. During the picnic the children participate in a variety of games and activities while their parents attend a workshop about college admission and financial aid. This workshop is intended to provide parents with helpful tips to encourage and support their children as they strive for success in education. The event concludes with a picnic-style lunch and a raffle with prizes donated by the APU Bookstore.
