The Office of Community-based Federal Work Study partners with APU’s Department of Exercise and Sports Science to encourage fitness and a healthy lifestyle for local youth through two programs, Girls on the Move and Kids on the Move.
Girls on the Move
Girls on the Move is designed as an exercise class for middle school girls in Azusa. The program strives to teach and encourage girls to exercise regularly and incorporate healthy eating habits into their daily lives. Classes focus on core-strengthening exercises, Pilates, calisthenics, and hip-hop dance. APU student instructors work with Diana Rudulph, assistant professor in APU’s Department of Exercise and Sports Science, to develop curriculum and dance choreography that promotes a fun, healthy lifestyle for the Girls on the Move participants.
Kids on the Move
Kids on the Move is a fun and energizing fitness program designed to help kindergarten through fifth grade boys and girls exercise their way toward a healthy lifestyle. Classes are taught by APU student instructors and focus on high energy and exciting workouts that help improve kids’ strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. APU student instructors work with Diana Rudulph, an assistant professor in APU’s Department of Exercise and Sports Science, to teach healthy habits in both nutrition and physical activity that lead to an overall healthy lifestyle.
BOKS (Building Our Kids' Success)
BOKS is a before-school physical activity program designed to jump start kids' brains and prepare them for a day of learning. The program combines play, physical activity, team games, and short talks on nutrition to create healthier habits for children to achieve life-long fitness. APU student instructors work with Diana Rudulph, an assistant professor in APU's Department of Exercise and Sports Science, to promote the profound impact of physical activity on a child's mind, body, and community.
"I have three kids enrolled in Kids on the Move and it's been really a great experience! I see that they exercise much more than they used to, even outside of the program. My kids are also motivated to finish their homework early so they can attend Kids on the Move! I am definitely going to enroll them again in the fall!
