Pre-Allied Health and Pharmacy Programs

APU offers several majors to address the needs of students who seek a pre-allied health or pharmacy program to prepare for research, teaching, physician assistant, occupational therapy, physical therapy, sports medicine, chiropractic medicine, pharmaceutical sales, and other health-care-related fields.

The allied health, biology, and biochemistry majors provide:

  • Knowledge and experience in modern health sciences
  • Preparation for medical or graduate school in a health-related field of study
  • Training for a career in laboratory research or public health

The allied health major within the Department of Biology and Chemistry contains most of the requirements for admission to graduate programs or careers in the health professions. Specifically, the B.A. program provides most of the prerequisites for careers or graduate work in cytotechnology, entry-level master’s in nursing, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, orthotics and prosthetics, physical therapy, physical therapy assistant, and radiation technology. The B.S. degree meets most of the prerequisites for careers in chiropractic, clinical laboratory science, and physician assistance. The biology or biochemistry major addresses the requirements for entry into a pharmacy program.

What About Graduate School Opportunities?

Based on a current survey of master’s programs (including physician assistant, occupational therapy, physical therapy, sports medicine, and chiropractic medicine), the pre-allied health and pharmacy programs within the Department of Biology and Chemistry fulfills most requirements for admission to graduate programs.

This program is also specifically designed to address the admission requirements for entry into graduate physical therapy programs, like APU’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program.
